Justin Timberlake has urged a judge to free ex Britney Spears following her earth-shattering testimony about her life under her father Jamie's conservatorship.

In a statement posted to Twitter, Justin, 40, - who famously dated Spears from 1998 to 2002 - said: 'After what we saw today, we should all be supporting Britney at this time. Regardless of our past, good and bad, and no matter how long ago it was.'

This comes just months after he publicly apologized for his actions during and after their relationship amid the release of the documentary Framing Britney Spears.

Britney, 39, testified via audio link on Wednesday in her ongoing legal battle to free herself from her father's conservatorship.

Since 2008, following a highly-publicized mental breakdown, Jamie Spears has controlled her finances and her personal life.

In her statement, the pop star described how she feels 'ganged up on, bullied and alone' and has no say about what she does, where she goes and who she spends time with.

She also does not have direct access to her estate which is valued at $60 million while paying her father $16,000 a month to be her conservator.

Britney catapulted to fame at 17 with the 1999 hit single Baby One More Time and cemented it with 2000's Oops!... I Did It Again.

In 1992, she had been cast in The Mickey Mouse Club which at the time also included Justin as well as Christina Aguilera, Ryan Gosling and Keri Russell.

Years later, when both she and Justin had launched their hugely successful recording careers, they started dating and confirmed their relationship in 2000.

In a 2002 interview with Diane Sawyer, Sawyer asked Britney: 'He's gone on television and pretty much said you broke his heart, you did something that caused him so much pain. What did you do?'

Britney, then 21, replied: 'We're both really young. It was kind of waiting to happen. I will always love him.

'Everyone has a side of their story and to make them feel a certain way, make them feel, you know... I'm not saying he's wrong and I'm not saying he's right either.'

In February of this year, Justin publicly apologized to his ex-girlfriend following the release of the documentary, Framing Britney Spears, which laid bare how she has, according to her fans, been exploited by the men in her life.

In a lengthy Instagram post, Justin wrote that he was 'deeply sorry for the times in  my life where my actions contributed to the problem, where I spoke out of turn or did not speak up for what was right.

'I understand that I fell short in these moments and in many others and benefited a system that condones misogyny and racism,' he said.

He went on: 'I also feel compelled to respond, in part, because everyone involved deserves better and most importantly, because this is a larger conversation that I wholeheartedly want to be a part of and grow from...'

Justin's statement continued: 'The industry is flawed. It sets men, especially white men, up for success. It's designed this way. As a man in a privileged position I have to be vocal about this.

'Because of my ignorance, I didn't recognize it for all that it was while it was happening in my own life but I do not want to ever benefit from others being pulled down again. I have not been perfect in navigating all of this throughout my career.'

Justin added: 'I know this apology is a first step and doesn't absolve the past. I want to take accountability for my own missteps in all of this as well as be part of a world that uplifts and supports.

'I care deeply about the well-being of the people I love and have loved. I can do better and I will do better,' he said.
