A Michigan police officer has died after he became trapped underneath a tree trunk he was cutting into pieces with a chainsaw.
Darrin Briggs was killed Monday night in the tree-cutting accident at his home in Jackson, which is about 78 miles west of Detroit.
The 45-year-old was a sergeant with the Tecumseh Police Department.
Police say he had been using a chainsaw to cut up a tree that had recently fallen at his home.

While he was saw the downed tree, a portion of the trunk managed to roll back towards him.
Authorities say he was pinned under the tree trunk.
It is not yet clear how long he was trapped before being found.
First responders say they found Briggs dead under the tree when they arrived on the scene.
Police said they are still investigating the incident but foul play is not suspected.

Briggs was a veteran of the Tecumseh Police Department.
He had worked with the local police department for two decades ever since graduating from college.
His obituary described him as a 'true outdoorsman who loved hunting and working on anything outside'.
