Bizarre moment gunman, 37, falls out of supermarket ceiling then shoots at cops during chase before finally being apprehended at gas station

Body camera and surveillance video showing a recent officer-involved shooting captured the moment an armed suspect fell from the ceiling at a Los Angeles-area supermarket and then opened fire at cops during a wild chase through the store aisles.

The incident took place back on November 1, but the Los Angeles Police Department released information, footage and 911 calls related to the armed confrontation on Wednesday.

According to the LAPD's description of the incident, at around 6pm on November 1, a man, later identified as 37-year-old Manuel Hernandez, was found inside the rear warehouse area of a grocery store in the 16900 block of Devonshire Street.

'A store employee told Hernandez he needed to leave the area. While he was walking Hernandez out of the store, Hernandez took a handgun from his waistband and pointed it at the employee,' police stated. 'Hernandez fled toward the rear of the store and the employee called 9-1-1.'

LAPD officers who responded to the scene began searching for the gunman, and found him when he came tumbling out of the ceiling and onto a commercial refrigerator.

'Get down on the ground!' an officer yells at Hernandez while training his weapon on the suspect, as seen in the newly released body camera video.

Another officer warns Hernandez: 'If you reach for anything you will be shot with the less lethal.'

Police seek to reassure the man that they are there to help, but he questions their presence at the scene, telling them: 'you have no jurisdiction here. Call San Fernando PD.'

Hernandez ignores the officers' exhortations to 'get down' and 'relax,' and hurls profanities at them as he proceeds to walk atop a row of refrigerators.

'I'm on meth, homeboy,' he is heard admitting to police.

During a back-and-forth with the officers, Hernandez, still perched atop a cooler, takes off his shirt.

'You guys are gonna f***ing end up killing me,' he says. 'I'd rather f***ing get in a shootout right here with all customers to see.'

The officers repeatedly ask Hernandez to 'relax' and come down so they could talk to him, but he continues arguing with them.

'F*** it, I was ready to die today anyway,' he tells them.

Following a 20-minute impasse, Hernandez finally jumps off the refrigerator, but instead of turning himself in, leads officers on a chase through the store, during which he opens fire on his pursuers.

According to the police department, one officer suffered an injury during the chase that required hospitalization.

Hernandez was able to escape and make his way on foot to a nearby gas station, where he was ultimately corned by police.

After several minutes of negotiations, he was arrested without further incident.

'I'm not resisting. I have no weapons,' he says while being handcuffed.

After being treated for cuts and scrapes, Hernandez was booked into a jail on a half-dozen charges, including attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer, false imprisonment and felon in possession of a firearm.
