Girlfriend of teenager killed in a horror Christmas Eve car crash reveals how a final act of kindness lead to his death when police tried to pull the car over for speeding - as new details emerge

The distraught girlfriend of a popular teenager killed in a horror Christmas Eve car crash has opened up about his tragic death.

Nicholas Hoenselaars, 18, was in the front seat of a Mitsubishi Lancer driven by his mate Savyo Khamou when the vehicle slammed into a power pole along Eastwood Road in Leppington, south-west Sydney, on Thursday night.

Police allege the P-plater was travelling at 113km/h in an 80km/h zone on Camden Valley Way at about 11:20 when they switched on the lights and sirens and gave chase.

During the 1km pursuit, a Traffic Highway Patrol car allegedly reached speeds of up to 160km/h before the fatal impact that saw both young men thrown clear of the vehicle. 

His girlfriend Natasa Zivanovic said Mr Hoenselaars only got in the car with Khamou to keep him company.

'It was his kindness that killed him,' the 19-year-old told The Sunday Telegraph. 

'In a way it just shows his character and it showed who he was.' 

'He always puts others before himself,' Ms Zivanovic said.

Khamou who suffered an arm injury in the crash has been charged with aggravated dangerous driving causing death, failing to stop for police and six other charges.

On Saturday, he was formally refused bail at Parramatta Bail Court.

The Magistrate ruled the trainee car salesman who lives at home with his parents poses 'an unacceptable risk to the community'.

Tributes have since poured in for Mr Hoenselaars who was a much loved soccer player.

Emotional photos show friends and family visiting the site where the beloved teenager died.

'Just not something you wanna hear on any day let alone Christmas Day... still in shock. Today losing one of my childhood best mates will always be one of the hardest days,' a friend shared online.

Meanwhile, football clubs Mr Hoenselaars had been apart of paid their respects to the young player, coach and referee.

'Nicholas had a massive soft heart who had time for everyone. He will be sorely missed,' the Sydney City Eagles said.

He had been studying to become a school teacher and during his first year of university dedicated his spare time to coaching and refereeing the younger teams at his football club.

A GoFundMe page has since been created to help his family in the wake of his tragic death.

So far, more than $55,000 has been raised.
