Wild baby elephant is rescued after getting trapped in a pit for 12 hours before being reunited with its mother

A wild baby elephant has been reunited with its mother in China after it was trapped in a pit and saved by authorities in China.

The calf accidentally fell into the hole in the ground after wandering into a village in south-western China's Yunnan Province.

After being stuck for 12 hours, the little Asian elephant was finally lifted out of the pit by a team of officers before returning to its herd.

The incident occurred in Simao district of Pu'er city on the evening of October 17, according to an official statement.

The area is home to nearly 120 wild Asian elephants since the first one settled there in 1993, the officials said.

A patrol officer, who was responsible for monitoring the local elephants' activities, reported to the authorities after spotting the mother elephant and her calf playing and looking for food in a village on October 17.

Later that night, the government was alerted by a farmer who found the baby elephant trapped in a pit at their home.

'We were using torches and saw the baby elephant,' one of them told state media Xinhua News. 

'It was walking around aimlessly, trying to find its mother. But the mother had left.'

Footage shows three officers walking with the saved calf as they tried to lead it back to its herd.

One of them can be heard saying: 'Come on, let's go. Let's go find your mommy and back to nature.'

It is believed the baby elephant was unhurt in the incident.
