Pac-12 cancels Cal-Washington football opener after one Golden Bears player tests positive for COVID-19 and 'several' others are quarantined

The Pac-12 football season has yet to begin, but the conference already has its first coronavirus cancellation as California called off Saturday's opener against Washington after one Golden Bears player tested positive.

An unspecified number of Cal players are currently being quarantined after contact tracing, which left the Golden Bears without the minimum number of scholarship athletes available for Saturday's game.

'The Pac-12 has approved a request from Cal to cancel the Washington at Cal football game scheduled for November 7,' the Pac-12 said in a statement. 'This decision was made under the Pac-12's football game cancellation policy due to Cal not having the minimum number of scholarship players available for the game as a result of a positive football student-athlete COVID-10 case and resulting isolation of additional football student-athletes under contact tracing protocols.'

The infected player's positive antigen test was confirmed through a PCR test, which specifically screens for the viruses genetic material.

Like the Big Ten, the Pac-12 initially opted against a fall football season amid the pandemic, instead choosing to play in the spring of 2021. But, after rapid tests became more readily available, the Pac-12 and Big Ten joined the other three 'Power Five' football conferences in playing a condensed fall season.

Unlike the ACC, SEC and Big 12, however, the Pac-12 and Big Ten did not allow for any bye weeks, which makes postponements impossible. As such, Saturday's Washington-Cal game needed to be cancelled.

'It is very disappointing that we will not be opening our 2020 season this Saturday night against Washington,' Cal coach Justin Wilcox said in a statement. 'My heart goes out first and foremost to all of our players who have been through so much since the pandemic began and worked so hard under difficult circumstances to prepare themselves to play.'

Meanwhile in the Big Ten, conference power Wisconsin has now cancelled two consecutive games amid its own outbreak. Furthermore, the University of Minnesota announced defensive coordinator Joe Rossi would not coach this Saturday against Illinois because he had tested positive for COVID-19.

At the mid-major level, the American Athletic Conference postponed the Tulsa at Navy game scheduled for Saturday because of positive COVID-19 cases and contact tracing at Navy.

The schools and conference made the announcement Thursday. It's the fourth FBS game this week and the 41st since August 26 to be postponed or canceled. Earlier this week, Conference USA rescheduled seven games that have been postponed for mid-December.

A makeup date has not been announced. Tulsa and Navy do not share a common open date the rest of the season, so the conference will 'consider a number of options with regard to the playing of the contest.'

This is the fourth time that a Tulsa game has been postponed or canceled because of COVID cases. Tulsa's game against Oklahoma State was pushed back a week to Sept. 19 because Tulsa had COVID issues. The Golden Hurricane were supposed to play Arkansas State on Sept. 26, but the Red Wolves couldn't put a two-deep lineup together. That game has not been rescheduled. Tulsa was set to play Cincinnati last month, but the Bearcats said they couldn't play, and the game was moved to December 5.

'We knew that this season would be different in the face of the pandemic, and unfortunately has forced another weekend without football for our team,' Tulsa athletic director Rick Dickson said. 'I'm disappointed for our football student-athletes and coaches who continue to work and practice diligently, but it reinforces the challenge facing all programs.'

Navy halted all football activities after positive COVID-19 cases among players and players being placed in quarantine after contact tracing determined they had high-risk contact with an infected person. Navy did not specify the number of players affected.

'Protocols and guidelines are very comprehensive both at the Naval Academy and within the American Athletic Conference,' Navy athletic director Chet Gladchuk said. 'An administrative decision has been made that clearly reflects the safety and welfare of all involved with both institutions.'
