Stephen Colbert goes into 'meltdown' and smashes a champagne bottle while threatening to 'cut anyone who comes near him' over Trump's refusal to concede the election - a day after the host toasted Biden's win

Stephen Colbert on Tuesday smashed a champagne bottle and threatened to 'cut anyone who comes near him' over Donald Trump's refusal to concede the presidency.

During Tuesday night's The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, the host took aim at the president, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Attorney General Bill Barr regarding their comments on voter fraud.

On Monday the 56-year-old had toasted Joe Biden's win during his first show since his victory was announced with a glass of champagne for him and his wife, Evie McGee-Colbert.

But by Tuesday Colbert was telling viewers: 'Yesterday, I was pouring champagne to toast the administration, and today I will cut you if you come near me, because there's some crazy s*** going on out there.'

His reaction sparked one Twitter user, CrazyTimes, to comment: 'The meltdown has begun.' Another, Susan Gaughan, added: 'You are seriously NOT funny anymore...so sad.'

The 2020 election unfolded smoothly across the country and without any widespread irregularities, state officials and election experts have said.

Despite that, Trump has sought to discredit the integrity of the election and argued without evidence that the results will be overturned.

Republican lawmakers have said the president should be allowed to launch legal challenges, though many of those lawsuits have already been turned away by judges and those that remain do not include evidence of problems that would change the outcome of the race.

Colbert said: 'Oh, what a strange, troubling world some people would like this to be.'

He also pointed out that 'peaceful transitions are important', adding: 'You don't see me starting the show every night getting in a knife fight with David Letterman.'

Colbert took over The Late Show from David Letterman in 2015.

After McConnell said Trump is '100% within his rights' to question election results Colbert had this to say: 'So the Republican Party is backing the president. Not because they believe his conspiracy theories, but because they're afraid of making him mad because they need his base.'

Quoting a Republican aide who said 'What is the downside for humoring him for this little bit of time? No one seriously thinks the results will change', Colbert added: 'Should our entire political system be arranged to salve the wounded feelings of the guy who lost?'

Colbert then moved on to Pompeo's speech on Tuesday in which he Pompeo told reporters with a grin that the 'transition' to a second Trump term would be 'smooth'.

The host said: 'No. Wrong. First, there won't be a second Trump administration unless Tiffany wins in 2032 with a slogan, 'Make America Make America Great Again Again.'

'Secondly, nothing this administration has done has ever been smooth. He couldn't even manage a smooth transition from stage to ground level.

'Third, your guy lost.

Fourth, if that was a joke, you just bombed so hard you violated the Geneva Convention.

'This is dangerous! He's the Secretary of State! He represents America to other countries, who just got the message that maybe the guy who lost isn't going to leave.'

Colbert added: 'You know all those dictators you visited, Mr. Secretary? That wasn't supposed to be an internship!'
