Heart-stopping moment stranded family make a treacherous crossing over a crocodile-infested river before the father slips and falls in

A man slipped and fell while rock hopping across a crocodile-infested river as he lead his family to safety after their car became bogged in the water.

Naomi, who did not want to give her surname, was crocodile-spotting with her child when she saw two cars get bogged at Cahills Crossing, in Kakadu National Park in the Northern Territory on Saturday.

One car managed to reverse out but the other, a blue Ford, got stuck, forcing a family of four to climb out and walk across rocks to the other side of the East Alligator River, which is notorious for being full of saltwater crocodiles.

Naomi said the whole ordeal 'was intense to watch'.

'You're standing there watching and unable to do anything to help and hoping they make it to the other side,' the mother told NT News.

'It was a kind of heart in mouth moment, not knowing whether you're about to see someone be attacked.'

Cahills Crossing is surrounded by memorials to people who have lost their lives crossing the river and warning signs to dissuade people from swimming.

Naomi filmed the family making the perilous journey across the river with one man leading the way to another man and two women.

At one point, the rocks became submerged underwater and the leading man slipped and fell into the water - before making a quick recovery and getting back on a rock.

Luckily, the man's splashes did not attract a crocodile and the whole family made it to the other side of Cahills Crossing in one piece.

While this family was able to walk across the river, a group of tourists were forced to swim across the river when their car became stranded during higher tides last week.

Pictures captured the moments after the blue Subaru Forester, which has an all-wheel drive system, became stranded at Cahills Crossing on November 16.

The group were forced to abandon the car and swim across the East Alligator River while their bogged vehicle blocked other motorists until the next morning.

The scenic road is known to attract hundreds of tourists each year, including dozens of bold drivers who attempt to make the daring journey across.

WHAT IS CAHILLS CROSSING?

The infamous Cahills Crossing is only a few metres wide, but it cuts through one of Australia's most dangerous bodies of water.

Along with varying tides, the water flow is strong enough to overturn vehicles, and it serves as a feeding ground for saltwater crocodiles.

Dozens of drivers try to venture across the submerged crossing, but some end up being washed into croc-infested waters.

Many have lost their lives, including fishermen, children, photographers, and backpackers.

Crocodile expert Grahame Webb said for every crocodile you can see, there are 10 you can't.

The most famous fatality at the Crossing was in 1897 when 40-year-old Kerry McLoughlin was decapitated by a crocodile on a fishing trip.

Rangers once counted 120 crocodiles in the six-kilometre stretch around Cahills Crossing.

There have been five fatalities in the area so far.
