Harrison Ford rushes to 'honorable' Dr Fauci's defense in new Lincoln Project ad after Trump threatened to fire covid expert

Harrison Ford is defending Dr Anthony Fauci following President Trump's threats to fire him after the election with the Hollywood star urging Americans to sack Trump instead.

The 78-year-old actor teamed up with The Lincoln Project political group to narrate an anti-Trump advertisement that was released on the eve of the election.

In the one minute advertisement, Ford hits out at Trump's recent threats to fire Fauci in the wake of the election.

The Hollywood star lists off Fauci's experience as director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and his works with previous administrations.

'He has served the American people tirelessly, honorably and selflessly from Reagan to Bush to Clinton to Bush to Obama, and now, to Trump,' Ford said.

His narration accompanied photos of Fauci working alongside the previous presidents before showing footage of the infectious disease expert putting his head in his hand during one of Trump's White house COVID-19 briefings.

The ad from the never-Trump conservative group then cuts to footage from Trump's rally in Opa-locka, Florida on Tuesday in which his MAGA supporters can be heard chanting: 'Fire Fauci'.

'Don't tell anybody but let me wait until a little bit after the election,' Trump told his supporters.

The ad continues with Ford saying: 'Tomorrow, you can fire only one of them. The choice is yours.'

Trump has repeatedly been at odds with Fauci over the duration of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Fauci has become more outspoken in recent weeks that Trump has ignored his advice for containing the virus, saying he hasn't spoken with Trump in more than a month.

He has raised alarm that the nation was heading for a challenging winter if more isn't done soon to slow the spread of the disease.

Speaking at one of his final campaign rallies on Monday, Trump expressed frustration that the surging cases of the virus that has killed more than 231,000 Americans remains prominent in the news.

It sparked his supporters to begin chanting 'Fire Fauci'.

It's the most direct Trump has been in suggesting he was serious about trying to remove Fauci from his position.

He has previously expressed that he was concerned about the political blowback of removing the popular and respected doctor before the election.

Trump cannot directly fire Fauci given he is not a presidential appointee.

Joe Biden tweeted later Monday in response to Trump's comments saying: 'We need a president who actually listens to experts like Dr Fauci.'

Former President Barack Obama also defended Fauci while campaigning in Atlanta for Biden.

Obama praised Fauci's public service and remarked that Trump's 'second-term plan is to fire that guy, the one person who could actually help them contain the pandemic'.
