An 11-year-old boy has died in hospital two weeks after a crash that killed his best friend, 10, as they were hit by a car while riding the same bicycle.

Mason Deakin had been fighting for his life in hospital since he and his best friend Steven Duffield were struck by a vehicle as they rode their bikes along on Anlaby Road on October 19.

The 11-year-old battled for a fortnight at Leeds General Infirmary's intensive care unit. 

Last night Mason's uncle revealed his 'fun loving' nephew's life support machine had been turned off.

Mason's best friend died at Hull Royal Infirmary on the night of the accident and both families are both being cared for by specially trained family liaison officers.

He was transferred to Leeds General Infirmary, where he had remained in a coma and on life support until Monday.

The collision happened at around 6.10pm on October 19 close to the East Yorkshire Buses garage in Anlaby Road and prompted a police investigation to be launched.

Officers were seen combing an area of grass near the foot of Anlaby Road flyover the following day.

A 30-year-old man had been arrested at the scene of the accident and has since been released under investigation.

Mason's dad, Jordan Deakin, told Hull Live following the crash that the family was 'in bits' as they kept their hopes up that Mason would pull through.

Doctors told their family they would have to take his treatment 'hour by hour,' following the horrific crash.

'Mason Lee fought for his life for two weeks in intensive care and on life support but as a result of a serious head injury he could not fight on no more,' he said.

'I am asking for help and support to help my family raise the funds for funeral costs. I would be very grateful at this sad time for all your help and support as would his mam Kirsty and his dad Jordan.

'Mason was a fun loving little lad and it's touched so many hearts of Hull.'

A second family member paid tribute on social media.

'Lost for words,' she said, 'RIP to not only my best friend by my cousin. I love you so much my boy.'
