Austrian village cleans up its act... by changing its name to the less risque 'Fugging'

An Austrian village will ring in the new year with a slightly different name – Fugging – after its rude original became too much for the locals to bear.

Residents of F***ing endured decades of sniggers from English speakers and the frequent theft of its signs by visitors.

Tourists made a point of stopping to snap themselves by the signpost at the village entrance, often striking lewd poses for posting on social media.

Finally, the 100 villagers decided enough was enough. Council minutes published yesterday showed that, after existing for nearly 1,000 years, the village will be named Fugging from January 1.

Municipal mayor Andrea Holzner said: 'I am confirming that it has in fact been decided by the local council. I will not say any more about it.'

The village, part of the municipality of Tarsdorf, north of Salzburg and near the German border, has long been a figure of fun in English-speaking media, which have gleefully reported local exasperation at signs being removed.

In 2018 the pornographic website Pornhub said it was offering free premium access to residents of F***ing and towns with names such as Titz, Germany or Big Beaver, Pennsylvania, in the United States.
