Lions Tour 2013: George North: Being a Lion is amazing, and we're settled in Australia

It’s amazing to lie back in bed at night and take a deep breath as a Lion – I dreamed about it as a boy playing in Anglesey and I’ve been fortunate enough to taste it at the grand old age of 21.

Touring with the Lions is epic. It is so flat-out, you can hardly catch your breath. To have the honour of putting on that coveted red jersey and trying to put my stamp on it will stay with me for ever. 

It has been a tough schedule, with a lot of travel, but we feel settled in Australia. Over the past fortnight I’ve experienced three different time zones over eight days and played four games within 10 days.

Even though you’re not necessarily completing full games, playing Saturday, Wednesday, Saturday, Tuesday is a lot of rugby. It reminds me of my under-11 days, when I would play Saturday and Sunday, then go to a swimming lesson — although we’re all a bit bigger and meaner now!

It is a brilliant learning experience to  train with the top players from England, Ireland and Scotland — even though it felt a bit strange when they all came to our Wales training base at the Vale!

It is interesting to see how different players train and approach matches. Some guys like to have busy training days in the build-up, others like to focus on their individual skills — kicking, passing or tackling — while others prefer to rest. I just try to stay relaxed but I definitely believe we’re all learning from each other.

Sharing rooms is a great way of mixing up the squad and bonding together. I started with a familiar face, Toby Faletau in Cardiff, but when we went to Ireland it was a bit nervy to walk into a room and find the massive frame of Paul O’Connell.

Interest rate cap on credit union is raised

Credit unions will go head-to-head with payday lenders after the Government announced it would raise the cap on interest charges so that unions do not make losses on short-term loans. The Treasury yesterday confirmed it will introduce legislation that from April 2014 would raise the interest rate ceiling on credit union loans from two per cent to three per cent a month following a consultation with lenders. Three per cent a month works out at APR of 42.6 per cent. Currently, restrictions on interest rates mean that while unions can make decent returns on long-term loans, loans of a similar length to those offered by payday lenders tend to operate at a loss. Helping hand: Short-term credit union loans will be more expensive, but more sustainable for unions and still well cheaper than payday loans.
