Cafe owner wins £10,000 compensation after expensive 'Hollywood' veneers fell out - leaving him afraid to eat or speak

A father-of-three has won £10,000 compensation after some of his new ‘Hollywood' veneers fell out just days after being fitted.

Nasser Homayoun-Fekri, 60, spent thousands of pounds on six upper and lower veneers to improve his crooked smile.

He had been assured they would last 20 years, so was horrified when they all became dislodged within just 14 days.

One tooth fell out at a family wedding in America while Mr Homayoun-Fekri, a café owner, was eating canapé.

As a result, he claims he became so fearful of eating that he lost more than four per cent of his body weight.

He even became wary of speaking in case more of the teeth fell out.

After months of agonising pain, he later sued dentist Dr Anjali Shahi, 47, who carried out the procedure at her practice in Sale, Greater Manchester.

He has now been awarded compensation in an out-of-court settlement after an expert report said Mrs Shahi’s treatment of Mr Homayoun-Fekri ‘was doomed to failure’.

Mr Homayoun-Fekri underwent the procedure four years ago at Manor Dental Practice, where Dr Shahi is principal dentist.

He said: ‘I had always had problems with gum disease throughout my life, and my teeth weren’t very nice to look at. I wanted to be able to have nice smile like something out of Hollywood.

‘I finally decided to get something done about my ugly teeth. The plan was very expensive, but I decided to go ahead with it, based on Dr Shahi’s advice.

‘I was actually recommended to go to Dr Shahi by a friend, so I was really shocked with the treatment I received.

‘I had saved for years to get it done and was finally looking forward to enjoy my new smile, but was left angry and disappointed.’

The businessman who lives in Stockport, Greater Manchester, with his partner Nahid Daneshvar, 60, added: ‘It was a very stressful and upsetting time for me.

Mr Homayoun-Fekri (pictured with his partner, Nahid Daneshvar) claims that within two weeks of having the veneers, which were meant to last for 20 years, all had become dislodged

‘I lost a lot of confidence, I just felt sick. I had put trust in her and it seemed the dentist wasn’t taking responsibility.

‘It came at a time when I was starting a new relationship and to find parts of my teeth appearing in my mouth and dropping into my food was, to say the least, alarming and psychologically deflating, leaving me afraid to open my mouth to speak.

‘Eating became a big problem and this was making me wary of meal times. Dental work is not cheap at the best of times and can be very painful if it goes wrong. This lady should have done her job properly.’

During the treatment, Mr Homayoun-Fekri was fitted with a bridge before six of his teeth were prepared for the veneers.

Although his new teeth were much bigger and brighter than he had anticipated, he left the dentist’s chair happy with the service.

He became so afraid that more would fall out (pictured) that he was reluctant to eat or speak and lost four per cent of his body weight

He ended up having to pay a further £2,500 to have the problem repaired but has now been awarded £10,000 compensation in an out-of-court settlement

But trouble began as he tucked into canapé at a family wedding in America just two weeks later and was horrified to bite into one of his new teeth.

He said: ‘One of the front veneers had fallen off, so I was left with a gaping hole. It was so embarrassing because it happened in front of everyone at the wedding. I had no choice but to superglue it back on. It totally ruined the day for me.’

Mr Homayoun-Fekri went straight back to the dentist on his return - and then a further seven times over the following weeks.

He said: ‘I was told they would last for 20 years so I was extremely worried when they didn’t even last 14 days.

In a report, experts from Birmingham Dental Hospital, said: 'The upper veneers failed very quickly and were never fit for purpose. Such treatment was doomed to failure'

‘At first the dentist was understanding and willing to sort them, but when all six of them started coming loose she started being very uncooperative and unprofessional.

‘I went back to her about thirty times, which took up so much valuable time, especially since I run my own cafe. I had to set aside around three hours for each appointment.

‘I decided to get a second opinion and was told I should have never been fitted with veneers and my new teeth weren’t secure because my natural ones had been over-prepared.

‘I wasn’t confident Dr Shahi would fix them properly, so ended up going to another dentist.’

Mr Homayoun-Fekri had already spent £11,500 on the cosmetic procedure but had to shell out another £2,500 to get it put right.

The dentist who fitted the veneers, Dr Anjali Shahi at Manor Dental Practice, in Sale, has denied liability

He said: ‘I was told there were grounds for suing the lady for damages.

‘I was awarded £10,000 after an out of court settlement. I’m pleased I got something, but I am still out of pocket.’

Dr Shahi, who has more than 19 years’ experience in the profession, declined to comment when approached by MailOnline.

In an expert report, Geoff Bateman from Birmingham Dental Hospital said: ‘The upper veneers failed very quickly and were never fit for purpose. In my view this bridgework should not have been provided. Such treatment was doomed to failure.’

Mr Homayoun-Fekri’s lawyer Heather Williams, from the Dental Law Partnership said: ‘Nasser was offered an extremely poor treatment plan that didn’t take into account his oral health.

‘His upper front teeth were over prepared for veneers, and veneers were not an appropriate option.

‘Despite Nasser spending thousands of pounds on private dental treatment from Dr Shahi, he faced spending thousands more to correct the problems.’
