British and Irish Lions 2013: Sam Warburton is to fight for his Test spot
Lions captain Sam Warburton will go into Saturday’s encounter with the Waratahs knowing that he has to fight for his Test place, after Warren Gatland reiterated his commitment to selection on merit.
The greatest dilemma facing the coaches is rapidly coming to a head. Difficult discussions will soon become unavoidable.
There is considerable intrigue attached to the choice of openside flanker to face Australia — and the back-row places as a whole — and it reflects the added complication posed by the leadership issue.

Before naming his tour squad on April 30, Gatland repeatedly acknowledged that his skipper would not have an automatic reservation in the first-choice XV.
He accepted that his leader would have to justify his right to take on the Wallabies, just like everyone else, and would be vulnerable to the form of rivals in the squad, just like everyone else. And so it has come to pass. Warburton’s appearance against Queensland Reds last Saturday was his first for almost two months.
The Cardiff Blues player emerged unscathed from a 75-minute work-out, after recovering from a knee injury, but he had evidently felt the strain and was not always at full throttle — understandably.
Yet, he will know that his Welsh No 7 rival, Justin Tipuric, has been one of the Lions’ stand-out performers so far on the tour — thus creating a headache for captain and coach.
