Warwick stages its biggest jumps meeting of the season on Saturday with the £60,000 Betfred Classic Chase attracting a competitive line-up of 13 runners.

But the meeting will take place against a backdrop of anger and uncertainty among some of the local community.

Warwick Racecourse

Before Christmas the council were handed what the local newspaper described as an 'explosive document' which questioned whether the track would be operating in five years if there was not a business diversification on the council-owned site that Warwick's parent company Jockey Club Racecourses rent.

This follows the rejection of a proposal to build a 100-room hotel on the Hampton Road site which has itself inflamed feelings with the track's immediate neighbours.

Plans for the council to contribute £6,000 to match fund with JCR a 'business options' appraisal have also reportedly been attacked by one local councillor, John Holland, for what he sees a local tax payers subsidising a multi-million pound company JCR, who he also been accused of renting the track on the cheap.

All this is playing out against the back-drop of the recent closure of both Folkestone and Hereford, which has heightened concern which JCR attempted to play down this week.

Scott Bowers, JCR spokesman, who rejected the allegations of cheap rent, added: 'There is no threat to the course. We are working towards the best possible business plan for the next 20 or 30 years.

'In 1964, Cheltenham went bust. It is where it is today because of the massive investment put into it. That is what we are trying to do with Warwick, make sure we are doing the best for the course.

'There is no comparison with Folkestone and Hereford. Our No 1 priority is Warwick and protecting the course.'

The unveiling of the International Flat classifications is normally a very formal, dry affair with the BHA struggling to raise interest outside the trade press.

But not next week when the eagerly awaited announcement of Frankel's official rating will be revealed.

Lord Grimthorpe, racing manager to Frankel's owner Khaled Abdullah, has even been invited along suggesting the possibility of a momentous announcement.

Rather than being held in one of the BHA's basement committee rooms, a swanky West End hotel has been booked to stage the event at a time when costs are supposed to be being cut.

The ill-feeling between the Racing Post and media group RMG, parent company of Racing UK, surrounding the ending of the Post's sponsorship of Kempton's Racing Post Chase still appears to rumble on.

Almost 12 months after the race was supported for the first time by Racing Plus, the Saturday rival part-owned by RMG, the Racing Post still cannot bring itself to call the contest by its real name.

And the condition seems contagious. The Post quoted trainers this week with Racing Plus Chase candidates who referred to the race as the Kempton handicap chase at the end of February.

Nicky Henderson saddled another successful mare carrying the Richard Kelvin-Hughes silks at Huntingdon on Friday in Glorious Twelfth. Kelvin-Hughes has been steadily building up his team of broodmares and 'the project' at Henderson called it is closing in on bearing fruit.

The Lambourn trainer has taken delivery of a three-year-old by Kayf Tara out of Chomba Womba, whose three grade two wins included the 2008 Elite Hurdle.

Glorious Twelfth is herself bred in the purple. Her dam Bilboa numbered the Adonis Hurdle at Kempton among her wins when trained by Francois Doumen.
