Scottish trainer Lucinda Russell probably did not mind getting stranded in France on Sunday after the bad weather disrupted her return flight.

Russell was watching Vengeur De Guye run at Pau, the track in south west France.

The four-year-old will be moving to her stable later in the year.

High stakes: Trainer Lucinda Russell

With top French stock able to command telephone numbers for asking prices among leading British owners, Vengeur De Guye is part of a project to buy promising but untested stock at more reasonable prices.

Venguer De Guye has remained with his trainer Emmanuel Clayeux.

Sunday's run for the son of fashionable sire Dom Alco resulted in a second place behind Virca De Thaix with the pair drawing well clear.

The good news for Russell is that there are rumours that winner has been subject of six-figure bids.

Mark Boylan, the Irish singer-songwriter who has made his name in racing circles, has produced a tribute song to the late jockey Campbell Gillies.

Boylan, who has performed at both the Cheltenham Festival and Breeders' Cup in America, has released 'A Song For Campbell' with funds raised going to the Injured Jockeys Fund.

The song, including a clip of commentary, revolves around the biggest day in the career of Gillies with his win on Brindisi Breeze in the Albert Bartlett Novices' Hurdle at last season's Cheltenham Festival.

Gillies tragically lost his life last summer while on holiday in Greece. The song can be bought on iTunes.

William's Wishes may not have convinced his trainer Evan Williams that he has the ability to mix it in the best company but an unbeaten run of five chase starts has persuaded some that the eight-year-old is one of the best bets to scrap it out behind seemingly invincible Sprinter Sacre in the Queen Mother Champion Chase.

That theory will be tested when William's Wishes takes on the Nicky Henderson-trained hot-pot in Saturday's Victor Chandler Chase at Cheltenham.

If William's Wishes proves himself worthy of a place in the Cheltenham Festival championship race, Williams will owe former jockey Vince Slattery a big drink.

The trainer has repeatedly said that the performances of William's Wishes on the gallops are less than ordinary and he was equally unimpressive when taking his place in a breeze up sale at Cheltenham in December 2008.

That is when the horses gallop before they are sold.

But Slattery persuaded Williams the gelding was worth a bid and the £11,000 he cost looks a good investment with his current winning almost £77,000.

Williams said: 'He would not be the sort of horse to shine at a sale like that but Vince rode him and told me he just thought there was something about him.'
