Back in business: TV Presenter Derek Thompson

The new-look Channel 4 racing coverage is under scrutiny for its lack of humour in some quarters but one of the men who used to supply that entertainment factor is bouncing back big style.

Derek 'Thommo' Thompson will this week take on a workload that sees him fly to St Moritz and Dubai to commentate, have a stint in front of the ATR cameras at their Milton Keynes studio, open a betting shop in Dunfermline and on Saturday, after an overnight flight from Dubai, host 'Thommo TV' at Lingfield Park on Saturday.

Thompson is also putting together his autobiography with the help of the Racing Post's Lee Mottershead.

The Captain understands that the book, due out in September, has a working title of 'You Couldn't Make it Up'. That's certainly true of the ebullient Thommo, who is keen to include some of the Tweets – he says he received over 1,000 – wishing him well in his successful battle with cancer.

Thommo told me: 'It's amazing after losing the Channel 4 work and cancer last year, this year things are beginning to look bright.

'Brough Scott suggested I write an autobiography. He said "The racegoers really love you'''. I am not going to pull any punches.'

It should be an fascinating read but Thommo had better not let wife Julie commandeer naming rights to her husband's memoirs.

Her suggestion this week was 'Tight' with two exclamation marks.

The Captain can't think why.

The Military Wives choir performed at Sandown on Grand Military Gold Cup day but they were without their popular and charismatic choir master Gareth Malone.

The Captain hears that Epsom insiders are trying to make sure the Malone and his baton are in attendance when The Military Wives sing the national anthem at Epsom on Derby day.

The colours made famous by 1988 Grand National winner Rhyme N'Reason, who was trained by David Elsworth at Whitsbury, are to return to the Hampshire stable.

Daniel Kübler, now one of the resident trainers at the complex, is to train two horses for Woodhaven Racing Syndicate.

They carry the colours of Juliet Reed, owner of Rhyme'n'Reason, who runs Woodhaven Stud wife Carl Leafe.

The post-racing life of the great Frankel continues to attract great interest with BBC 5Live focussing on the great horse in a special programme on Thursday night. The broadcast featured a contribution from trainer Sir Henry Cecil, who the Captain hears, has great hopes for a filly called Hot Snap this year.

She won her only race at Kempton in September and is a half-sister to six-time group one winner and Oaks heroine Midday, who just happens to be the first mare mated with Frankel.

Trainer Paul Nicholls won Sandown's Grand Military Gold Cup with Gwanako on Friday and the horse, who was leased for the day to Major Mike Shaw, carried some familiar colours.

The purple and white checks were carried of Michael Marsh sported by dual Whitbread Gold Cup hero Larbawn (1968 & 1969) which he trained and Topsham Bay (1992 & 1993) which he owned.

Nicholls said: 'Michael Marsh passed them on to owner Colin Lewis who passed them on to me.'
