US records one shooting every 12 minutes: At least 915 shootings in a single week leaves 430 dead and 1,007 wounded with the nation on track for its deadliest year of gun violence

The US has recorded one shooting every 12 minutes in the last week, with at least 915 incidents leaving 430 dead and 1,007 wounded as gun violence spirals out of control across the nation.

Data from the nonprofit Gun Violence Archive reveals more than 1,000 Americans were wounded or killed in shootings in the seven days between Saturday July 17 and Friday July 23.

The violence of the last week comes as the nation is on track to record its deadliest year of gun violence to date.

Between January and July 24 2021, there has been 25,216 gun-related deaths including homicides, murders, suicides, unintentional shootings, and defensive gun use incidents.

On average, this means 123 people have died every single day in 2021.

If the trend continues, almost 45,000 people will lose their lives to gun violence by the end of the year.

This figure dwarfs the 43,563 shooting deaths recorded in 2020 - which had been the deadliest year for shooting incidents in at least two decades.

Another 451 have been injured while the figures are even worse among teenagers.

A total of 1,896 children aged 12 to 17 have been injured and 713 killed through to July 24.

Members of law enforcement are also among the victims of the surge in gun crime, with 33 killed and 193 injured as of July 24.

But the last year took a particularly steep climb amid the pandemic.

In light of the spike in gun violence, Joe Biden unveiled a series of executive actions designed to curb gun violence following the string of shootings.

The six actions include: a crackdown on the proliferation of 'ghost guns,' which are built from kits; tighten requirements on pistol braces that allow for more accurate shooting; the Department of Justice will publish 'red flag' legislation for the states; invest in evidence-based community violence interventions; and DoJ will issue an annual report on gun trafficking.

Biden said mass shootings are a 'public health crisis' and argued he was not trying to impinge on the Second Amendment - a claim gun rights groups and Republicans have made against the introduction gun control laws.

Gun trafficking strike forces have been launched in five cities - New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco Bay Area Washington DC and Chicago - to tackle surging violent crime.

The strike forces are designed to get to the root of the country's firearm problems by launching targeted prosecutions of traffickers and dealers that will have a long-term impact by stopping weapons reaching criminals.
