Marvel actor Simu Liu is slammed for deleting a 2018 tweet criticizing Mark Wahlberg for seeking a pardon for his 1988 assault on two Vietnamese men, after it was announced they'd appear in a film together

Marvel Shang Chi actor Simu Liu has come under fire after he admitted deleting a  tweet slamming Mark Wahlberg for trying to get a pardon for a 1988 assault on two Vietnamese men, after it was announced that the two would be appear in new movie, Arthur the King, together.

The 31-year-old Canadian actor had tweeted in 2018: 'Let me get this straight, Mark Wahlberg beat a helpless Vietnamese man with a stick until he passed out when he was 16, and is attempting to get the courts to grant him an official pardon on the basis that he's "turned his life around"?'

'Let me get this straight, Mark Wahlberg beat a helpless Vietnamese man with a stick until he passed out when he was 16, and is attempting to get the courts to grant him an official pardon on the basis that he's "turned his life around"?'

But after landing a role alongside the 49-year-old Hollywood star, Liu deleted the tweet - sparking accusations on Twitter he 'sold out' his principles for the movie.

When pressed about deleting his tweet, Liu who was born in China and immigrated to Canada when he was 5, insisted it was so he could have 'progressive conversations' with the Ted actor.

'So I think it’s pretty obvious why I would delete a tweet like this,' the Kim's Convenience actor responded to one Twitter user. 'I’m trying to set the stage to have progressive conversations and take positive action instead of just hurling stones. I understand the anger but I don’t appreciate the immediate hostility and harassment.'

He added he'd posted the original tweet in a moment of anger but was 'not denying what I said in the moment.'

But both responses were met with a firestorm of irate posts as people questioned the genuineness of his sentiments.

'Think I would have respected it more if you just came out and said "I did it for the bag". Anyone interested in having the hard conversations doesn't attempt to scrub away the evidence of their past criticism,' someone tweeted.

'It’s very obvious why you’d delete it - your principles are malleable when it serves your interests,' declared Scott Menor. 'That doesn’t make you unique. Musk is a terrible person, but I follow SpaceX and bought a Tesla, and I voted for Biden who is also awful because Trump is worse. Just don’t pretend'

Some appeared to have some sympathy for Liu's decision to delete his tweet challenging Wahlberg's pardon plea.

'I’d have more respect for a “Honestly just trying to not upset my crazy coworker” than this fake a** tweet,' said one person.

Another added: 'Irony is you’re probably not even being paid the same as him :/ but good luck with having those "conversations".'

But others were furious at Liu, who is appearing in Marvel's Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings next year.

'Do you think this is a good look considering you're the damn lead in an upcoming first ever Asian Marvel movie?,' asked another annoyed fan.

In his pardon petition, Wahlberg claimed that his record continued to impact him and could prevent businesses, such as restaurants, that work with him from getting licenses.

But the request for pardon was met with controversy from many in the Asian American community, who claimed the actor never apologized for the assaults.

He would eventually say in 2016 that he regretted seeking the pardon after the petition was closed and the pardon dropped, the Los Angeles Times reported at the time.

Liu will play Marvel's first Asian superhero in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, which tells the tale of Shang-Chi, a martial arts master who was raised inside a reclusive Chinese compound.
