BREAKING NEWS: Sydney to Hobart yacht race is CANCELLED for the first time in 76 years

The Sydney to Hobart yacht race has been cancelled for the first time in 76 years due to a coronavirus outbreak on the Northern Beaches.

The event organisers on Saturday night announced it was with 'great sadness' the 76th Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race would not go ahead in 2020.

They said the coronavirus pandemic has distrupted sporting events across the world throughout the year and the 'Great Race' is another victim of the health crisis.

CYCA Commodore, Noel Cornish AM said: 'We are bitterly disappointed to cancel the race this year especially considering the plans and preparations we had put in place to have a COVID Safe race.'

'We were so well prepared to run the race and we're only six days from the start. This is the first time in 76 years that the race will not be conducted.'

The safety of competitors and the health and welfare of residents in NSW and Tasmania were key considerations for cancelling the event.

Greater Sydney was defined as 'Medium Risk' by Tasmania on Saturday - meaning all people entering the state from the NSW capital are required to quarantine for 14 days on arrival.

'As this restriction would apply to all competitors, families, race management and staff, it is unrealistic to proceed further with planning for the Race,' the Sydney Hobart Yacht Race statement read.

'It is unlikely the restrictions and advice will lift in the immediate future.'

The race was due to begin on Boxing Day.

The strengthening of the state's border restrictions for Sydneysiders from midnight follows 23 fresh coronavirus infections recorded in the Harbour City on Saturday.

There are now 41 active coronavirus cases in the NSW community.

Premier Peter Gutwein told reporters in a late Saturday afternoon press conference after being in meetings with health officials all day, he'd been advised to raise greater Sydney to 'medium risk' level.

This means travellers from the Northern Beaches, as well as from any other part of metropolitan Sydney, would be required to spend two weeks in quarantine on arrival.

He said the higher risk rating across Sydney would inevitably impact the Sydney to Hobart Yacht race.

'These conditions would make it very challenging for the race to proceed,' Mr Gutwein said.

Race organisers had been saying all week they intended to run the famous yacht race as planned.
