Major winter storm will slam the Northeast this week and could dump up to 10 inches of snow on New York City, Virginia and Boston

The Northeast will be hit by a major snowstorm this week that could bring between six to 10 inches of snow from Virginia to New York City and could last long enough for a white Christmas.

A major nor’easter will barrel through the mid-Atlantic to the Northeast starting on Wednesday bringing with it heavy snow, fierce winds, and coastal flooding.

Experts forecast the storm will dust snow and cold temperatures in New York, Boston, Washington D.C., and Philadelphia, according to Weather.com.

Anywhere between six to 10 inches of snow is expected to fall in Virginia, New York City, Boston possibly southern New England.

In Washington, Baltimore and the eastern suburbs of Philadelphia mild ocean air may turn the snow into ice and rain.

'A major winter storm is expected to impact portions of the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast this Wednesday into Thursday as a nor’easter develops and lifts up along the east coast,’ the National Weather Service said Sunday.

‘It’s going to be kind of a fluffy kind of snow. There’s certainly the possibility that a lot of this snow can stick around up until Christmas, which obviously makes it easier for Santa,’ Accuweather meteorologist Tom Kines said to the New York Post.

But it won’t be an easy winter wonderland as powerful wind gusts of up to 30mph are expected to create white out, blizzard conditions.

On Sunday the storm was pushing across the Rocky Mountains and the Southern Plaines, dusting Oklahoma with snow.

At the same time a strong high pressure storm in eastern Canada will also bring a cold blast to the Northeast.

By Wednesday snow will fall in Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Ohio. 

The NWS says snow could total up to or exceed a foot throughout New York state, especially on its northern and western edges. 

Parts of the Poconos and Catskills could receive an inch or two of snow before the storm dies down Thursday. 

At least six inches of snow is slated to fall in eastern Massachusetts as well as Connecticut and Rhode Island, as per the Washington Post.
