Keyboard warrior who was ordered to pay a wedding planner $100k after posting negative reviews about her business on social media will have to cough up even more money to her after failing to have the ruling overturned

An online troll who was ordered to pay a Bali wedding planner $100,000 after posting defamatory messages about her business on Facebook has been hit with further financial penalties in court.

Tristan Moy, 33, from Brisbane, moved to Indonesia to start her business in 2014.

But she suffered 'hurt and humiliation' when two Australian women began posting salacious comments about her and her company on social media in 2017.

Those women were makeup artist Stacey Lee Isaac, 33, from Notting Hill in south-east Melbourne and single mother of-two Kellie Maree Smith, 32, from Mount Tambourine in Queensland.

Ms Smith was ordered to pay $50,000, plus $9,750 interest to Ms Moy for seven online posts, while Ms Isaac’s damages totalled $100,000 plus interest for four comments.

The reason Ms Isaac was hit with a higher penalty was because she had continued to troll the business-owner after legal proceedings had already started.

She filed a court application hoping to overturn the decision but Brisbane Magistrates Court ruled on Friday she would now have to pay a further $9,900 for Ms Moy's court costs.

Ms Isaac had asked for the November 9 ruling to be set aside because it was made in her absence.

Her barrister David Topp told the court Ms Isaac did not show up because she thought the dates were just prospective and not fixed dates, the Courier Mail reported.

But Magistrate John Smith said Ms Isaac had attended a hearing on November 3 where the trial date was proposed and she did not raise any concerns.

He added that there was no reason for Ms Isaac’s non attendance, and ruled that she must pay Ms Moy’s court costs.

Ms Moy has previously said she was confused when the comments first started showing up, as she had never met Ms Smith and only knew Ms Isaac from when she paid her to do hair and makeup at her own wedding 10 years ago.

But it wasn't until her children were brought up that Ms Moy decided to sue.  

'There was a comment on my parenting skills and my child and when they brought that into it, as a mother I was not going to tolerate that,' she told A Current Affair.

The pair were ordered to pay a combined $150,000 for their defamatory Facebook posts, which Ms Moy said had devastated her reputation. 

'These girls have tarnished my name and tarnished my reputation, we've lost business over it, can't even count how much money we would have lost in business,' she said.  

Ms Moy also argued that Ms Smith launched the attacks to help Ms Isaac's emerging wedding planning business at a defamation hearing in early November. 

But Ms Isaac denied those allegations, instead claiming outside of court that she was being sued because she had matched with Ms Moy's then–husband on Tinder.

In an affidavit Ms Moy said she was 'devastated to read' her husband at the time had met Ms Isaac on Tinder.

Single mother of-two Kellie Maree Smith, 32, from Mount Tambourine in Queensland, also claimed Ms Moy was unprofessional and would try to ruin client's weddings

Ms Isaac was the owner and administrator of a bridal Facebook page with more than 1,000 followers, which is where most of the defamatory comments were made, reported the Sunday Mail.

She worked as a makeup artist in Melbourne and ran three businesses 'Bali Edge', 'Illuminating Moments Bali' and Bali Snaps Photobook' - and shared a post criticising Ms Moy's business. 

'I know I for sure wouldn't hire someone to plan my wedding day who would sabotage another brides wedding day,' she wrote. 

She also implied the wedding planner had gotten Ms Isaac deported from Bali.  

While a post by Ms Smith directly accused Ms Moy of ruining her own wedding, by trying to get the venue cancelled.

That was despite Ms Smith not having used Ms Moy's wedding planning services.

Ms Isaac posted a total of four defamatory posts on the Facebook group between 2017 and 2018, even after the lawsuit was filed. Ms Smith made seven posts.   

Ms Smith said there was no way' she could afford to pay the $50,000 plus $9,750 interest for her part in the saga.

She said it would send her bankrupt.

Ms Isaac said she 'felt sick to her stomach' after hearing she had to pay $100,000 in damages over the incident.

The makeup artist endured a harsher penalty because she had made another defamatory post in 2018 after the lawsuit was lodged.

Ms Moy's solicitor, Australian Law Partners' Duke Myrteza, said the case is a warning to keyboard warriors about what they say online. 

'I expect there will be many more cases involving Facebook posts before our courts in the future,' he said. 

'This case is a clear warning to everybody who uses Facebook or other social media platforms that anything defamatory you post online can have serious consequences.'

It comes after the daughter of rugby league legend Mark Geyer won a defamation case over false claims she had featured in a high-profile sex tape.

Montanna Geyer, 24, was slandered by aspiring journalist and sports fan Fouad Ghosn, 24, on the NRL Memes Facebook page. 

The page wrongly claimed in March 2019 Ms Geyer was the woman in a sex video with player Tyrone May.

But a jury found otherwise on Friday evening - with Mark Geyer telling Daily Mail Australia his daughter's name had been cleared.

'It's a line in the sand,' Geyer said.

'Every action has a reaction and you can't just say things about people behind a keyboard and get away with it.'
