Homeowners have become part of living Advent calendars as they each unveil amazing Christmas-themed windows on the days leading up to December 25.

Several projects have popped up on different streets across the country in response to the pandemic, as fundraisers and in replacement of cancelled festive markets and fairs. 

Photos shared on social media of streets in London, Gloucestershire and Cheltenham show carefully crafted scenes complete with lights, silhouettes of Christmas characters and of course their specific date of the month.

One street in Harringay, north London, organised their ADVENTure trail with the help of South Harringay school which has lost hundreds in fundraising money through missed bake sales and discos this academic year.

Local resident Clare Bennett's window will be number 15 in that living advent calendar. She told The Guardian: 'We're all really impressed with the quality of the ones so far, and there is a pressure not to let the side down.   

'There have been endless discussions about the use of Sellotape and sticky-back plastic. It's been quite a learning curve seeing what you need to make a window display. You can get quite lost in these discussions.'    

Organiser Liz Adams explained that the PTA is selling copies of a map of the windows for £3, but has offered the chance for people to make a larger donation. 

'The majority of people have added extra,' she said. 'Our role is to make money for the school and build a community, and this does both of those things.'

The tradition of advent windows had been growing in the UK, but in 2020 it has taken off, with many projects evolving out of community social media groups. Pictured is the number 11 window display on a street in Harringay, north London

Cassie Martin, a teacher who lives in Cheltenham, revealed her family's advent window on December 1. She posted about the idea on her local Facebook group and was shocked at how much interest there was in it.  

Meanwhile in south London, Katie Carruthers took on window seven, with illustrations of Santa and Rudolph.

She heard about the scheme through an aid group which was set up during lockdown.

This house on a road in Hornsey in north London was chosen for the first of December. It featured colourful stars and panels 

She told the publication: 'Someone on the group had the idea, inspired by the rainbows for the NHS, and to bring a bit of cheer after a rubbish year. Loads of streets in our area are doing it.'

In Lewes, Sussex, the PTA at Wallands community primary school has set up a '12 days of Christmas' trail.

The school normally has a big Christmas fair, and the town had missed its traditional Bonfire Night extravaganza. 

One organiser said: 'It's an outlet for everyone's creativity. The idea has gained momentum – we may be aglow.'
