Australia's Christmas Day forecast: From torrential rain to scorching heat and thunderstorms - here's what the weather will be like near you on December 25

Christmas Day will bring scorching heat and clear skies for parts of Australia while other areas will be battling torrential rain.

Sydneysiders will likely awake to rain on Christmas morning, with a 50 per cent chance of showers early in the day and tops of just 22C forecast.

Sarah Scully, duty forecaster at the Bureau of Meteorology, said the weather is set to clear up in the evening. 

'For Sydney, cloudy with the chance of a shower during the morning, probably early morning and then again during the afternoon,' she said.

The bureau said to expert some heavier downfalls around Sydney going into early next week. 

'A Tasman low has moved away from the east and that's why the rain eased overnight but a front will still bring some showers to south east Australia,' Sky News Weather senior meteorologist Tom Saunders told news.com.au.

'There will be some wet weather for NSW on Christmas Day and Queensland can expect widespread heavy falls.'

The heaviest rainfall will be seen across drought-stricken central Queensland.

Forecasters are concerned about the possibility of flash flooding due to a monsoonal trough moving through the region.

'Central Queensland is bracing for a special treat this year, with falls up to 100mm on Christmas Day - maybe more,' The Bureau of Meterology tweeted. 

'Queensland, unfortunately, won't see dry weather on Christmas Day for much of the state,' Mr Saunders said. 

More than 70mm of rain is forecast to fall on Townsville in the four days following Boxing Day, while 40mm is expected in Longreach.

Brisbane will be a balmy 28C on Christmas Day and Boxing Day, with a few patches of rain expected.

Victoria is in for a generally cool and cloudy Christmas day, with 21C and partly cloudy skies forecast for Melbourne.

Perth is in for a scorcher with the mercury reaching 40C on Christmas Eve and set to hit 35C Christmas Day.  

The temperature will then cool into the mid thirties with clear skies. 

In Hobart, there will be rain for the next two days before it eases. Christmas however will be cloudy with the mercury reaching just 17C.
