Woman, 45, is charged with GBH after police officer is left badly injured after being 'deliberately struck by a car'

A woman will appear in court after a female police officer suffered serious injuries when she was struck by a car in Grays.

Abiola Akilla, 45, of Grays, Essex, has been charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent and causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

She was also charged with failing to stop after an accident, driving without insurance and driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence.

Essex Police say the incident took place in Grays, Essex , after a driver failed to stop 

Akilla is due to appear at Basildon Magistrates' Court on Monday November 2 and has been remanded in custody.

Essex Police said the incident happened shortly before 8am on Saturday in Stanford Road after a driver 'initially failed to stop when directed to by the officer'.

A police statement said: 'It was reported that the driver had pulled into a layby after being requested to stop by the officer, however reversed back onto the main road again after not complying with further instruction from the officer.

'As the officer tried to persuade the driver to move back into the layby, the car was said to collide with the officer before driving off.'

The officer was airlifted to hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries on Saturday 

The officer was taken to hospital by air ambulance where she is being treated for serious injuries. A police statement said her injuries are not considered to be life changing or life threatening.

A 22-year-old man, also from Grays, who was arrested on suspicion of perverting the course of justice, will face no further police action.
