Two Wisconsin police officers shot after confronting hit-and-run suspect outside a Holiday Inn who remains at large and is wanted on attempted murder charge in North Dakota
Two police officers in Wisconsin were shot and wounded early on Friday morning after confronting a hit-and-run suspect who has gone on the run, police said.
Authorities have identified the suspect as Nathanael Ray Benton, 23, of Fargo, North Dakota.
Benton is also wanted by authorities in Fargo in connection with a shooting on Sunday.
Authorities in both Wisconsin and North Dakota are warning the public that Benton is armed and considered dangerous.
Delafield Police Chief Erik Kehl said on Friday that one of his officers and another from nearby Hartland confronted a man suspected in the hit-and-run crash outside a Holiday Inn at Interstate 94 and Highway 83 in Waukesha County, about 27 miles west of Milwaukee.

The officers were shot after responding to reports of a hit-and-run in Delafield, Wisconsin, which is located 25 miles west of Milwaukee
Delafield Police Chief Erik Kehl said on Friday that one of his officers and another from nearby Hartland confronted a man suspected in the hit-and-run crash outside a Holiday Inn at Interstate 94 and Highway 83 in Waukesha County
Shots were exchanged and the two officers were hit, Kehl said. The officers' wounds are not believed to be life-threatening, the chief said.
Two people were detained, but they are not believed to be directly involved in the shooting, Kehl said.
I-94 was closed in both directions.
The westbound lanes are closed at Highway S while eastbound lanes are closed at Highway 83, according to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation.
A large perimeter around the busy Highway 83 and I-94 interchange was sealed off early Friday.

Wisconsin law enforcement officials released a photo of the suspect showing him wearing a flat brim hat, sweatshirt, and what appear to be khaki pants.
Benton is also alleged to have shot a man in North Dakota on Sunday.
Police in Fargo said that a man was taken to the hospital with bullet fragments lodged in his head sometime before 3am on Sunday.
Investigators said the man took a ride share from Fargo to Moorhead and started complaining of head pain.
That’s when he returned to Fargo and called 911.
