Terrifying moment a surfer narrowly avoids a killer shark as the predator lurks just metres below the waves

A surfer has had a narrow brush with a shark while he sat on his board.

The man was sitting on his surfboard and waiting for a wave in Sydney during the close encounter on Saturday.

Footage showed the man on his board as a shark lurked just inches below him.

The man felt the shark and quickly put his whole body onto the surfboard.

He then began to paddle away.

'Norman just wanted to talk but this guy wasn’t interested,' the video was captioned.

Social media users said they wouldn't stick around to talk to Norman either.

'I wouldn't be hanging around for a chat either,' one person said.

Another said: 'I would have been whole body on the board too scared to freaking move.'

A third said: 'I did the same when I first encountered Norman, but I wasn’t on a board!'
