Swimmers enjoying blazing temperatures at two popular Sydney beaches are evacuated from the water because it was 'contaminated with FAECES'

Swimmers enjoying a Saturday afternoon dip at two popular beaches were evacuated from the water after it was found to be contaminated with faeces.

All beachgoers at Double Bay's Redleaf Beach, in Sydney's ritzy east, were forced to leave the area just before 1pm, and two hours later, it was the same story at Bronte Beach.

Security and representatives from Sydney Water were seen ushering people out the water, after a public toilet blockage left the water too dangerous to swim in.

One keen swimmer hoping for a day in the sun told Daily Mail Australia that five Sydney water vans scrambled to the scene to fix the contamination.

‘It was a bit chaotic, at least 100 or so people were still milling around the beach confused,’ he said. 

‘Officials wouldn’t tell anyone what had caused it, someone with a clipboard just laughed at me knowingly when I asked what it was.

‘I’m just glad I didn’t make it into the water, it’s pretty disgusting and such a shame on a long weekend.’

After everyone rapidly exited the water, Sydney Water officials took a number of water samples away for testing.

A spokesperson from Sydney Water confirmed the incident was caused by a 'wastewater overflow' from a public toilet.

'A blockage in a public toilet wastewater line operated by Woollahra Municipal Council caused a wastewater overflow this morning in Double Bay.

'It is understood Council rangers closed Redleaf Beach and Murray Rose Pool and barricaded the toilet block.'

Swimmers are unlikely to be granted access back into the water for the rest of the day and possibly on Sunday.

Waverley Council also confirmed on its Twitter page that 'the water at Bronte Beach will be closed for the rest of the day due to poor water quality from a sewerage issue.'
