"We believed that 'Stand By Me' would go perfectly with the conference's concept of unity and singing in both Spanish and English was important," Prince Royce tells Billboard.
Since the only Latin artist to do during the four-day digital occasion in which Joe Biden was nominated as the Democratic candidate for the upcoming 2020 presidential elections, Royce says he had been motivated to be a part of conference and also represent Latinos.
"Of course I said yes," he states. "All eyes are on the convention which for the first time is virtual and that I was pleased to be a part of it and reflect the Latino community."
At the end of his performance, Royce sent out a message of unity and issued a call to act. "Mi gente, let us stand by each other and don't forget to vote this November," he said. "Together we can make a change." "The future is in our hands"
Below, Prince Royce shares exclusively with Billboard what prompted him to perform at the DNC and exactly what he expects from the next president of the USA.
Billboard: What prompted you to be part of the DNC this year?
Prince Royce: They reached out to encourage me to perform and of course I said yes. All eyes are on the conference which for the first time is digital and I had been happy to be part of it and represent the Latino community.
Why did you choose the song you decided to sing?
We felt that"Stand By Me" goes perfectly with the conference's message of unity and singing in both Spanish and English was significant; it represents who I am and my community.
What do you expect from another president of the United States?
What I expect of any future president of our nation is to become a legitimate leader, to have integrity and dedication, to care about all Americans placing our country above politics and to be a unifying force in our diverse nation. We want the kind of leader that reflects our country's values and can correctly take care of the pandemic that's been disproportionately impacting our country.
What's your message to that young Latino who is still undecided on if they'll be casting a vote in the 2020 elections?
There's not any justification for not voting. It is our responsibility as citizens, and that I mean that for all those your favorite candidate may be. We have to really study the platforms of each candidate and vote for who we believe is ideal to lead our country.
What's important to me personally as a voter is unity and non-racism, education, immigration reform, and the environment, our economy and dealing with the pandemic crisis within our country which is disproportionately affecting Latinos and continues to cripple our market with each passing month.
