COVID detectives are investigating the latest cases at the City Tattersalls venue on Pitt Street, with the cluster now rising to 23 with eight new infections uncovered overnight.

'These cases attended the centre during the past few days, while unknowingly infectious and after being exposed to infections in the gym,' New South Wales Health said in an alert Saturday.

'Members who attended the gym on the above dates but outside those times should be on the alert for symptoms and get tested and self-isolate if symptoms do develop.'

As well as the weight room, the infected members also took part in some group sessions which include Aqua Aerobics, Stretch Class and Pump Class.

It remains unknown whether the CBD cluster originated in the City Tattersalls Club and then spread to workplaces in the city and to households across Sydney and the Central Coast.

Meanwhile, two other Sydney sports clubs have also been put on high alert after COVID-19 positive cases visited the premises.

Randwick Golf Club, in Sydney's east, closed on Friday after an infected member entered the club on Tuesday.

The prestigious Mosman Rowers, on Sydney's lower north shore, also closed for deep cleaning after a COVID-19 positive member visited on Monday and Tuesday.

Staff who may have come into contact with the guest have also been told to isolate and get tested.

The news comes as New South Wales reported 14 coronavirus cases on Saturday - an increase which has the state's health authorities on edge over.

'As a precaution NSW Health is extending existing visitor restrictions by strongly advising people who live or work in the Greater Sydney metropolitan area and Central Coast to refrain from visiting aged care facilities until 12 September,' the alert said.

The restrictions mean no visits to care homes on Fathers' Day on September 6.

Chief Health Officer Kerry Chant said the growing cluster linked to the City Tattersalls Club gym was proof how quickly virus outbreaks can spiral out of control.

'It highlights how quickly COVID-19 can spread in the sense we have a seeding event, its amplification and then that has seeded other workplaces and lead to exposure in the community to a number of venues that we have announced,' she said.

To assist in identifying undiagnosed earlier COVID cases, NSW Health is asking anyone who attended the Tattersalls Club between 4 August 2020 – 18 August 2020 to get tested for COVID-19 and isolate until a negative test result is received.
