The Lincoln Project, the band of Republicans actively campaigning against Republican President Donald Trump, is out with a new television spot in Ohio beginning this weekend focusing on the president's call for a boycott of both Akron-based Goodyear Tire & Rubber.
That includes purchasing $425,000 worth of air time starting this weekend and running through the week when Trump will accept the nomination through the Republican National Convention -- to air the place on cable in Cleveland, Akron and Youngstown, according to a Lincoln Project spokesman. The 30-second place will also run on air from the Youngstown marketplace.
"Times in Ohio are getting tough. Donald Trump is making it more difficult, demanding a boycott to place Goodyear from company," the narrator says in the ad. "That's 3,300 union jobs. Jobs that maintain families all over Ohio. Why? His feelings got hurt. Trump talks a fantastic game, but he's not on our side. Never was. Never will be." Trump's call for a boycott of one of Ohio's largest employers, stemming from his anger that the firm doesn't permit its workers to wear"MAGA" hats or alternative political attire, was thrust into the forefront as a political issue from the nation on Wednesday.
Democrats, union members and Akron city officials were infuriated by the attack on one of the region's biggest economic drivers, together with Republicans tepidly disagreeing with a boycott and not commenting on the president himself.
The Akron company is among the predominant companies for Northeast Ohio and a cultural touchstone for the city, which is nicknamed"Rubber City" because of its long history as a pioneer in American tire production. Goodyear is still the greatest American tire manufacturer.
The Goodyear ad marks the second this week from The Lincoln Project having an Ohio focus. On Thursdaythey published a 1-minute spot including Republican former Gov. John Kasich's speech at the Democratic National Convention.
The Trump effort didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.
