David Moyes starts work at Manchester United's training ground - before being driven out by Sir Alex Ferguson

David Moyes turned up for work 43 days early on Monday morning. Even by Sir Alex Ferguson’s standards, it was some show of commitment.

Less than 16 hours after the final whistle had blown on Everton’s season, Moyes drove into Manchester United’s training headquarters at Carrington just before 9.20am to open a new chapter in his life.

He is not due to officially succeed Ferguson until July 1, but the new manager is clearly in no mood to stand on ceremony and Everton have given Moyes their blessing to get started.

What awaited him beyond the security gates at Carrington was a seminal moment in English  football; the handing over of the keys to the castle from one Scot to another.

Ferguson was there to greet him. So, too, were his first-team coach Rene Meulensteen and United’s outgoing chief executive David Gill.

The players were taking part in a Manchester United Foundation golf day, apart from Patrice Evra who had turned up to study for his coaching badges and Rio Ferdinand, who is at a friend’s stag party in Spain, but Moyes’ visit caught the rest of the staff by surprise.

Quite a few were off yesterday and those who were there had not expected to see him so soon.

The 50-year-old was introduced to them all as he was given a personal guided tour of the complex by Ferguson before they spent an hour chatting in the manager’s office.

Moyes spoke to several members of the backroom team including goalkeeper coach Eric Steele and told them that he will have a clearer idea of any changes by Friday. He is expected to meet Ferguson’s No.2 Mike Phelan on Tuesday.

He also spoke to academy boss Brian McClair and his staff — some of whom were preparing for last night’s Premier League Under 21 final against Tottenham in which United came from 2-0 down to win 3-2 — as well as reserve team manager Warren Joyce and members of the club’s medical team.

There were no speeches to the staff, this was a chance for Moyes to take in his new surroundings in relative peace and quiet and make some private introductions before the real work begins.

In total he stayed for three hours before leaving in the back of a white Chevrolet 4x4 driven by United’s kit man Albert Morgan.

Juggling jobs: David Moyes will now turn his focus towards Manchester United

Farewell: Moyes gestures to the Everton fans at Stamford Bridge in his final game

Ferguson was in the front as he accompanied Moyes to the League Managers Association awards dinner in London last night, where Sir Alex was named Premier League Manager of the Year.

As well as a chance to discuss Moyes’s transition into the job and United’s plans for the summer, it was a show of the support Ferguson is keen to give his successor as he also gets used to a new role on the board of directors.

United want to make that transition as seamless as possible and the obvious comparison between the two men is what attracted United to Moyes in the first place.

He shares Ferguson’s determination, drive and all-consuming passion for football and wants to be involved in all aspects of the club.

Waving farewell: Sir Alex Ferguson took charge of his 1,500th and final game at West Brom on Sunday

Those close to the former Everton boss say that he has learned to switch off more in recent years and it is unlikely that he will find it possible to run United in quite the same hands-on way he has at Everton for the last 11 years.

Moyes still has some loose ends to tie up in readiness for his successor at Goodison Park — ‘I’ll probably be doing two jobs for the next week or so,’ he said after his team’s defeat at Chelsea on Sunday — and there will be a short family holiday. But he is clearly desperate to get going, as he showed yesterday.

He has already exerted some influence over his new club according to sources who say he played a key role in Ferdinand agreeing a one-year contract extension to stay at United next season.

The long goodbye: Ferguson's squad applaud their manager one final time

It is unlikely there will be many changes, particularly early on. Indeed, Ferguson suggested at last night’s awards dinner that he knew the title was in the bag the day before last season began, such was the determination of his squad.

‘I felt it on August 17,’ he said. ‘The players were really focused. If you’d seen our dressing room the day we lost the league to Man City, you had a feeling. It was the disappointment. Adversity is the best recipe for success. There’s great character in this squad, enough experience, great resolve.’

Those players can look forward now to working with a coach who has travelled Europe studying  techniques at other clubs, and in other sports, to make his sessions as stimulating as possible.

Record: Ferguson won his 11th manager of the season award

‘We’ll embrace a new challenge,’ said Michael Carrick after United marked Ferguson’s last game in charge with a thrilling 5-5 draw at West Bromwich Albion.

‘For so long we have had that stability. We would turn up for pre-season and know what to expect.

‘There are going to be certain things that are new and many things that stay the same. There is a structure and not a lot wrong. We are looking forward to the new manager coming in.’

As Ferguson hands over the baton, he can anticipate a more leisurely lifestyle than the one he has known at United for the last 26-and-a-half years.

When he says goodbye to Moyes in London this morning he will head for the Newmarket stables of Sir Michael Stoute where he has a share in leading Derby contender Telescope. For the man he has  chosen to fill his shoes, the ride is just beginning.
