He earned his place in broadcast history with the iconic 'Do you believe in miracles?' exclamation at the U.S. hockey team's win over the Soviets at the 1980 Winter Olympics, but now Al Michaels is facing DUI charges.


Michaels, the announcer for NBC's Sunday Night Football, was arrested Friday night shortly before 10 p.m. in Santa Monica.

Michaels was attracted the attention of police after making an illegal U-turn.

TMZ reported that he was given a field sobriety test and was placed under arrest after performing poorly.

'He makes an illegal U-turn in a business district. ... Two motor officers see that. They're staged in a gas station lot. They see the illegal U-turn, and they go after him,' Sgt. Richard Lewis, public information officer for the Santa Monica Police Department, told USA TODAY.

Lewis declined to comment on his blood alcohol level, but sources told TMZ it was allegedly measured at .08 and .09 in two separate tests, putting him just at the legal limit.

Michaels was reportedly extremely cooperative with officers, but still spent the evening in jail.

He was released on his own recognizance Saturday morning, CNN reported.

Michaels will appear at Los Angeles Municipal Court at 8:30 a.m. on June 26 to face the charges.


'We are aware of the situation and we've been in contact with Al,' Greg Hughes, a spokesman for NBC Sports, told CBS News. 'We have no further comment at this time.'

Michaels and his representatives failed to return requests for comment.
