An armed mugger was shot dead by a politician's security detail after their attempt to rob one of the bodyguard's phones went badly wrong.

Dramatic surveillance camera footage captured the moment two police officers opened fired on the motorcycle-riding suspects outside the home of São Paulo mayor Ricardo Nunes on Wednesday morning.

The Brazilian cops were waiting to drive Nunes' daughter to school when the muggers approached their unmarked parked car. 

They had caught side of a phone being held by the female cop, and were trying to seize it in what investigators called a crime of opportunity. 

That woman and her male colleague both opened fire after the mugger riding pillion brandished a gun, and struck him at least once.

Cops assigned to the security detail of São Paulo, Brazil, mayor Ricardo Nunes were involved in a shooting that left an alleged mugger dead outside his home on Wednesday morning. The police officers were waiting to drive the politician's daughter to school when the suspects pulled up to their unmarked car and attempted to rob them

The driver of the motorcycle immediately sped down the street, leaving behind his accomplice. He tried to run away, but collapsed moments later, and succumbed to his wounds at the scene.

Investigators have not released his name. 

The Civil Police said Wednesday night that the getaway suspect is 20 years old and a college student, but they have not named him. He remains on-the-run.

'We made the effort and managed to locate the who was in charge of the motorcycle,' Civil Police chief Fábio Baena said in a press conference. 'He has already been identified and we are trying to locate him. We are trying to get him to turn himself in.'

Authorities were able to recover the 20-year-old fugitive's  motorcycle after it was found abandoned in a building garage.

'What we realized by analyzing the images is that it was a crime of opportunity. They were passing by and the saw the police escort with her cellphone in her hand and they tried,' Baena said. 'It was a that seemed easy and ended up getting worse.'

The São Paulo City Hall confirmed that the two cops 'working in the mayor's security team reacted to the armed robbery by two men on a motorcycle.'

Mayor Nunes has not commented on the incident.
