Sydney's 'Super Sunday' vax drive falls short as 3,000 jabs are left unused - while hundreds vent fury because they could only get AstraZeneca instead of Pfizer and blame NSW Government

Hundreds of Sydneysiders who went to the 'Super Sunday' vaccination drive have been left outraged after they were told only AstraZeneca doses were available.

Less than half of the vacant slots at Sydney Olympic Park - which were specifically advertised as offering only AstraZeneca - were filled on Sunday, despite the targeted push for the 'food providers of Sydney' to get inoculated.

But in another instance of bungled messaging, 200 people turned up believing they'd get the Pfizer vaccine - and left empty-handed after refusing the abundant alternative.

Workers were heard trying to quell frustration in the crowd, with one heard yelling: 'The only people that will get Pfizer are the people who are booked in for Pfizer.

'Whatever the Health Minister has said, please take it up with the Health Minister because we have copped enough abuse today.'

On Saturday, Health Minister Brad Hazzard announced a 'big day out' for cafe, restaurant and catering staff to come forward and get jabbed.

Around 5,000 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine were set aside for the effort, however only 2,000 people rolled up their sleeve, leaving the rest untouched.

However frustration ensued at Sydney Olympic Park after residents complained they had been made to believe Pfizer doses would be available.

The drive to get more AstraZeneca shots into arms comes as new figures revealed New South Wales and Victoria were sitting on one million unsued doses.

Despite being abundantly available, incredibly safe and extremely effective at preventing serious illness from Covid, many are still hesitant due to ultra-rare blood clotting seen in 1 in 50,000 people who get the jab.

A couple from Rosebery told The Australian they had driven half an hour to get the jab but had been disappointed to find out only AstraZeneca was on offer.

'We were watching the press conference and Gladys said they had excess capacity at the clinic so we rushed down,' Josh said.

'I don't feel comfortable getting AZ, we made the trip for no reason.'

One healthcare worker at the hub told the publication 200 hopefuls had been turned away while another said they hadn't been prepared for the premier's call to arms.

While 1 in 50,000 may suffer the side effect, there is a 1 in 1,000,000 chance of dying from it - with blood clots far more likely to occur from Covid itself.

'We were told there were 900 bookings for today, and to expect a few walk-ins because the Premier made an announcement on TV,' they said.

'On a weekday we normally vaccinate around 10,000. Today we had the staff for 1,000 vaccinations. We did about 2,800 vaccinations in total.'

Sydney Local Health District chief Teresa Anderson boasted of the dedicated drive as 'our biggest AstraZeneca day ever'.

Ms Berejiklian said the state was 'tracking well' to hit the ambitious target of six million jabs in arms by the end of August.

The premier said 95,000 NSW residents turned out for testing on Saturday, while 20,612 vaccine doses were administered.

The latest federal data reveals 46 per cent of the state has had one dose of the vaccine while 23 per cent are double-jabbed.

'Vaccination is the key,' Ms Berejiklian said. 'I can't urge people enough to come forward and get vaccinated.'

There have been 13,636,580 vaccinations administered nationwide as of Saturday, including 140,225 in the previous 24 hours.

On Sunday, it was announced Australia's first drive-through Covid vaccination hub will open at a former Bunnings warehouse in Melbourne, while Victorians under 40 will be offered AstraZeneca jabs at state-run clinics.

Chief Medical Officer Paul Kelly has also called for easier access to the jab but refrained from endorsing door-to-door vaccinations.

In her press conference Premier Gladys Berejiklian said a myriad of access points to the vaccine were being considered by her government.

'But... you need to be careful when you consider door-to-door vaccinations, to make sure that you are not exposing people to the virus,' Ms Berejiklian said.

'That is why it is really important for us to encourage people to go through their GP, go through their pharmacist and book through the mass vaccination centre.'
