Lions cut cornerback Alex Brown after he is arrested for 'driving under the influence in wrong-way crash that left his teammate and another driver with critical injuries'

Detroit Lions cornerback Alex Brown was arrested Sunday after allegedly driving while impaired, traveling the wrong way on the highway, and getting into a head-on collision that critically injured two people, including a teammate.

Brown has since been waived by the team, which was aware of his arrest when the move was made. Tight end Charlie Taumoepeau injured his neck in the collision, according to prosecutor Kym Worthy's office. He is expected to recover.

Brown is accused of driving north on the southbound side of I-75 near Detroit's Mack Avenue on Sunday at 2am. He struck another car head-on at a fast rate of speed, resulting in injuries to  Taumoepeau and the other driver, a 27-year-old man.

Taumoepeau was trapped in the car, but freed using the Jaws of Life, according to MLive.com.  He was given a cervical collar and taken to a hospital.

Brown was arrested on two counts of operating under the influence causing serious injury and two counts of reckless driving causing serious injury, according to Worthy's office. He was booked in Detroit and his arraignment is set for Tuesday.

Michigan State Police say the driver of the car that caused the crash was driving the wrong way on a highway in Detroit shortly after 2am on Sunday.

'As troopers made contact with the driver, the investigation revealed that the 24-year-old male driver from South Carolina was impaired,' the Michigan State Police wrote in a post on Twitter. 'He was arrested at the scene and transported to the hospital by troopers for a blood draw. He was then lodged at the Detroit Detention Center.'

'Alex was waived from the team Sunday afternoon and Charlie Taumoepeau is receiving proper medical care following injuries sustained from the incident,' the Lions said in a statement released Monday night.

'Driving under the influence is a matter we take very seriously. We as an organization extend our thoughts and support to the victim and his family during his recovery.'

The Lions waived Taumoepeau with a non-football injury designation on Monday and he will revert to the reserve/non-football injury list on Tuesday if he is not claimed.

Brown, who is from Santee, South Carolina, has three games of NFL experience with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2019.
