Footy star rapist Jarryd Hayne QUITS his jailhouse sewing job that earned him $24-a-week - but he's got a new gig that will see his wage double

Jarryd Hayne has quit the $24-a-week sewing job he was assigned in prison and has started a new traineeship in the jail's laundry room - which will see his wage double.

The disgraced footballer was jailed for a minimum term of three years and eight months for sexually assaulting a woman in her Newcastle home in 2018 and is locked up at the Cooma Correctional Centre.

Cooma is a medium and minimum security facility 400km south-west of Sydney which houses high-profile white collar criminals.

Hayne, 33, had to learn how to use a sewing machine when he was put to work in the jail's textile workshop but after requesting a different career path he's now making $48.96 a week washing inmates' sheets, the Daily Telegraph reported.

A prison source said Hayne was 'no seamstress' and said he 'wasn’t happy and wanted out' of the job.

He was offered a normal role in the laundry room which would have seen him earn similar to what he made from sewing before he accepted the traineeship at the end of June.

The former NRL star will now make close to $50 a week for 42 hours work.

It's a monumental fall from the $1.2million-a-year he made playing for the Gold Coast Titans.

Hayne will also reportedly be washing the sheets of those in the aged care and healthcare industries as well as those in nursing homes.

All sentenced inmates in full-time custody in NSW are expected to participate in Corrective Services Industries work programs, if eligible.

Corrective Services Industries offers work for Cooma prisoners in textiles, food services, community projects, ground maintenance and the jail's museum.

Hayne, who made his name as fullback for the Parramatta Eels, can use the money he earns in prison for 'buy-ups' such as extra food and toiletries, or to help pay family bills.

His pregnant wife Amellia Bonnici and their four-year-old daughter Beliviah Ivy will be able to make the long trip for visits or book to speak to him via Zoom.

Hayne was earlier held at the maximum security Parklea prison before being transferred to Cooma on May 26 which was once home to Oliver Curtis, the husband of PR guru Roxy Jacenko.

Curtis spent more than a year at Cooma, where temperatures plummet below freezing in winter, after being jailed for conspiring to commit insider trading in 2016.

Other infamous inmates who have spent time in the prison include Labor politician and paedophile Milton Orkopoulos and disgraced businessman Salim Mehajer.

Hayne had reportedly asked for access to Foxtel at Parklea - subscription TV is not available in NSW prisons - and had apples thrown at him by other inmates.

The dual Dally M medal winner and onetime State of Origin stalwart also reportedly had to be informed washing was only done once a week.

Hayne, who had been held in a health clinic separate from the main prison population at Parklea, is now free to mix with other inmates.
