Entire Melbourne apartment block is plunged into two weeks isolation as four supermarkets and two chemists are also exposed to coronavirus

Residents of an apartment block in a trendy bayside suburb have been ordered to isolate for two weeks as Melbourne's latest coronavirus outbreak continues to grow.

The list of exposure sites swelled to more than 500 venues as the state recorded 25 new cases on Sunday.

Four supermarkets and two chemists are among the latest exposure sites announced during Melbourne's sixth lockdown, which is set to be extended into a third week.

Around 150 residents at an apartment building in Fitzroy Street in St Kilda cannot leave their homes for two weeks after a cleaner worked at the complex while infectious for three consecutive days on August 10-12.

Affected residents have slammed the lack of advise from health authorities, who took over communications from building management on Saturday night.

Residents claim they were ordered by building management on Saturday to get tested immediately and isolate until they received a negative result, the Herald Sun reported.

Some were informed by email the next day they would have to self-isolate for two weeks after the complex was upgraded to a tier one exposure site.

Others were seen coming and going from the complex after testing negative as health authorities came under fire.

'They want to take over communication but where are they? At this stage I have heard nothing from them,' one furious resident said.

'The government has a lot of explaining to do.'

Another contacted the health department and was told they were free to go if they'd hadn't been contacted directly.

'You hear communication has improved but then you see this happening … maybe it was all a mistake? Who knows.'

Premier Daniel Andrews said it was too soon to decide whether restrictions would be lifted in Melbourne as planned on Thursday.

'I have always tried to be as frank as possible, whether from this podium or in the work that I do, I am not here to do anything other than to be frank,' he said.

'I do think these numbers are too high. I am not going to make an announcement today. Today is Sunday. I do not know what our position will be on Thursday.'
