Aaron Wright, 42, is charged with aggravated assault and burglary after he allegedly broke into his ex-wife's home and shot her four times while their four children slept nearby, just hours before they were scheduled to appear at a custody hearing Monday

A Texas man is accused of cutting the power to his ex-wife's home before breaking in and shooting her four times while their four children slept nearby - just hours before the pair was scheduled to appear for a custody hearing.

Surveillance video from around the time of the incident on Monday shows Aaron Wright, 42, walking up to the house at 3.08am before running away a few minutes later.

The video showed his girlfriend also with him. She hasn't been named.

Authorities said that Wright, accompanied by his girlfriend, approached his ex Andrea Wright's home before he used a power box on the side of the house to shut off the electricity - disabling its alarm before breaking in through a rear window and shooting her.

After the shooting, two of the children ran to a neighbor's house to report what had happened.

'They came over and saw us out here, a daughter and a son, and we took them in the house to protect them from what’s going on,' a neighbor, Richard Carlson, told KPRC-TV.

Aaron and Andrea Wright had been scheduled to appear at a custody hearing Monday for their children, who are aged 7, 9, 11 and 13, and investigators said the father may have feared losing custody over the kids.

Andrea Wright survived, and the Harris County Sheriff's Office reported on Monday that she was in stable condition. The children were unharmed.

A Gofundme was set up to help pay for her medical expenses, and her boyfriend, Jimmy Bolton said that she will need multiple surgeries, KTRK reported.

'She is going to have a long road to recovery,' he posted on Facebook, along with photos of Aaron Wright appearing to show up at the house.

Wright, meanwhile, is charged with aggravated assault and burglary with intent to commit another felony.

Police said they found and arrested him at 10.30am, but did not specify where.

The girlfriend has not been named or charged in the case, although authorities said they are investigating, according to KTRK.

After he was released on bond Tuesday, he said, 'I would never do anything like that.'

In court on Tuesday Wright's bail was set at $175,000. He cannot own a firearm, and he was ordered to wear a GPS tracker and stay 200 feet away from his ex-wife, Andrea Wright's home, reported.

Because Wright appeared to use 'planning' and 'technique' when he broke into the home the judge said she set $100,000 bail for burglary and another $75,000 for aggravated assault.

The Harris County Sheriff's office recorded three calls to Andrea Wright's home since March regarding Aaron Wright, including for a terroristic threat and a suspicious vehicle. Bolton posted photos of him appearing to show up at the home

After he was released on Tuesday, Aaron Wright denied the shooting, telling KTRK reporter Shelley Childers: 'I didn't open fire. I would never do anything around my kids, and I would never do anything like that, ever.'

The couple, who filed for divorce two years ago, reportedly had a tumultuous relationship, with Andrea Wright getting a temporary protective order against him in March, 2020, according to records.

She tried getting it extended in November, 2020 but it was denied.

Carlson alleges Aaron Wright had previously broken into his ex-wife's home shortly after she moved in.

'That's our judicial system, unfortunately,' another neighbor told KTRK. 'I think there needs to be some changes to keep people like that away from people, you know, from her. Her ex-husband, who she knows is a violent person.'
