Parents of six-year-old boy who was declared cancer free after two year battle with leukaemia tell of their 'absolute devastation' as he is readmitted to hospital

The parents of cancer hero Oscar Saxelby-Lee have revealed their 'absolute devastation' after the youngster was rushed back to hospital on New Year's Eve.

Olivia Saxelby, 26, and Jamie Lee, 28, shared the heartbreaking update just two months after the six-year-old returned to school after being declared cancer free.

Oscar, from St Johns, Worcester, won the nation's hearts following a courageous two year battle against a rare form of childhood leukaemia and finally appeared on the road to recovery.

But on Thursday evening mother Olivia revealed how their 'little warrior' was once again facing uncertainty after he was left hospitalised for the new year.

She wrote: 'Unfortunately, this is the way we are entering 2021. We are absolutely devastated.

'Not because of the date or the timing, nor because of how horrid it is to be going into a new year separated, but because our boy doesn't deserve any more pain.

'He doesn't deserve to be hooked up to these lines AGAIN! He doesn't deserve to go through any trauma at all!

'Our hearts are heavy, but they are in no way lost! We will keep fighting for you Ozzy Bear - Forever.

'We have no clear answers yet. We do not know what tomorrow will bring. What we do know is.... You WILL come out stronger! And this WILL all be ok!

Oscar was able to play friends at Pitmaston Primary School, in Worcester, for the first time since December 2018 when he was originally diagnosed.

Oscar was found to have aggressive T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukaemia and doctors gave him just a three month 'life or death' race to find a stem cell match.

His parents launched a UK-wide appeal for donors which led to a record breaking 4,855 volunteers queuing in the freezing rain to get tested at the school.

In total more than 10,000 people were tested across the UK until a match was finally found in May last year.

A few months later Olivia and Jamie faced further anguish when the cancer returned.

But after a crowdfunding campaign raised £600,000, his family flew him to Singapore for pioneering treatment not available on the NHS.

Oscar became only the second child in the world to undergo ground-breaking CAR-T therapy before having a second bone marrow transplant.

He has now been cancer free for 11 months following the cancer treatment in Singapore and flew back to the UK in June.

Discussing his return to school, Olivia said previously: 'It has been a traumatic couple of years but Oscar took everything in his stride..

'Obviously things aren't normal at the moment but to get a semblance of normality back after months of being in hospital, is just an absolute joy.

'He kept asking us when he could go back to school but we didn't know when that would be given the coronavirus situation as well.

'The school have been brilliant with him and worked so hard to welcome him back safely.

'He had the biggest smile on his little face all day and was so happy to get back to school.

'Oscar is truly an inspiration, we didn't know if it was a day we'd ever see

'It's been a rollercoaster of emotions but this has been one of the happiest moments for sure and boy does he deserve it.'
