Karl Stefanovic fires a BRUTAL shot at 78-year-old Joe Biden as Today show guest mocks the US president for 'reading off the teleprompter' - just moments after he was exposed for not knowing American politics

Karl Stefanovic has claimed Joe Biden's one job was to 'stay alive' as the 78-year-old is sworn in as the 46th US president - bringing Donald Trump's leadership to an end.

The Today host spoke with panellists, Senator Jacqui Lambie and Stellar and Body + Soul's editor-in-chief Sarrah Le Marquand, on Thursday morning as Biden promised to give his soul to reunifying America.

Ms Le Marquand said the 'real work' will begin for Biden once he convinces everyone that the Trump era is officially over.

Stefanovic then fired a brutal shot at the 46th president.

'I don't want to be uncharitable but I thought his job for the last few months has been to stay alive,' he said with a smirk.

Ms Le Marquand responded: 'And to read the teleprompter in front of him probably.'

Stefanovic was overcome with laughter as he continued: 'As someone who does that for a living, I don't think it's that easy.'

His comments came just moments after he was exposed for not knowing about American politics.

Stefanovic and his co-host Allison Langdon were interviewing Former White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer, who served under Trump.

The Today host embarrassingly asked Mr Spicer if he thought Trump would be impeached.

Mr Spicer replied: 'He was impeached. The question is: Will he get convicted?'

Stefanovic said: 'That's right, yes.'

Trump was last week impeached for the second time after he was charged with 'incitement of insurrection' following the US Capitol siege.

Mr Spicer was also asked if he thinks Trump will return.

'He said so this morning that in some way, shape and form he will be,' Mr Spicer said.

'I think there is no question he plays this outside role in the Republican party and the question is what role is that?

'Is that a king-maker in primaries going forward or is it as a candidate himself again in 2024?

'I would have to guess that it's more of the king enough maker than the candidate.'

Mr Spicer said he hopes the new president is successful so the nation can overcome the coronavirus pandemic and send Americans back to work.

Stefanovic said the changes Biden intends to enact are 'probably going to come across as divisive for those who did vote for Donald Trump'.

Mr Spicer agreed that the new president has 'every right' to pursue the 'policies and personnel that he chooses to' - but he took umbrage at Biden's use of the word 'unity'.

'Part of unity doesn't just mean, I'm going to say the word unity over and over again, it means actually trying to do things,' he said.

'And if your first day and your first week are filled with actions to undo and repudiate the last administration, I don't think that's the foundation of an administration that is going to achieve unity.'

Mr Spicer was also asked if he thinks Trump will return. 'He said so this morning that in some way, shape and form he will be,' Mr Spicer said. 'I think there is no question he plays this outside role in the Republican party and the question is what role is that?'
