Bloody video shows 50-year-old woman and her dog after machete-wielding maniac hacked them on Brooklyn street before being shot dead by cops

Dramatic amateur video shows the immediate aftermath of a brutal machete attack in Brooklyn on Tuesday night that left a woman and her pit bull severely wounded moments before police shot and killed the teenage assailant.

The horrific clip emerged just as photos surfaced showing Darlene Duda, 50, lying in a hospital bed with a large bandage over her cut forehead and her hospital gown soaked with blood emanating from her wounds.

Duda and her five-year-old pit bull, Honey, were viciously attacked on Tuesday night by 18-year-old Samuel Lazaro of the Bronx, according to police.

Lazaro was brandishing a large knife when he lunged at Duda from behind, blindsiding her while she was walking Honey in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn on Tuesday.

Duda was sliced on the back of the head and hands by Lazaro as he wielded the two-foot-long machete.

Honey, who was trying to protect Duda, suffered wounds on the left shoulder and back. The dog received stitches and is ‘doing great,’ according to Duda.

Police quickly arrived on the scene and ordered Lazaro to put down the machete.

Police and witnesses said that Lazaro then charged at the officers. One of the officers, a two-year veteran from the 73rd Precinct, fired off a round, hitting Lazaro in the chest.

Attempts to resuscitate Lazaro through CPR were unsuccessful. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he died of his gunshot wound.

The dramatic three-minute video was filmed by a local resident who said that Lazaro also lunged at him and his son as they walked through nearby Betsy Head Park just a few minutes before the attack on Duda.

The video shows two police officers approaching a badly bleeding Duda and a wounded Honey.

Duda is holding back the traumatized pooch who is barking at the officers, apparently in the mistaken belief that the cops wish to do Duda harm.

The man who is filming tells the officers that the assailant attacked both the dog and the lady.

‘The dog is protecting the owner,’ the man is heard telling the responding officers.

The man who is filming and another neighbor are seen angrily telling the officers that Lazaro is ‘the one you’re supposed to kill.’

‘Y’all want to shoot somebody? That’s the one you’re supposed to kill!’ the man is heard telling the officers.

Duda is then seen with blood streaming down her face as she tries to hold Honey back.

The man filming the aftermath once again tries to explain to the responding officers why the dog is acting aggressively toward them.

‘He attacked her,’ the man tells the officers. ‘He tried to kill this lady.’

Honey continues to bark at the officers while Duda restrains her in an attempt to calm her down.

Another officer is seen asking the witnesses nearby to move away from Duda and Honey.

‘He pulled out a machete and started attacking, the man who filmed the aftermath tells police.

The man then walked toward the street where two police officers were seen trying to resuscitate a wounded Lazaro, who was laying unresponsive on the pavement.

The man tells the officers that Lazaro also ‘attacked several cars that were going by.’

One of the officers is seen repeatedly pressing down on Lazaro’s chest in an effort to revive his heartbeat.

‘This a motherf*****r you need to let die,’ the man filming tells the officers.

‘That’s the motherf*****r you should shoot and kill. This guy’s a psycho.’

Duda was bleeding so profusely that witnesses thought she wouldn’t make it.

‘She’s about to die,’ the man filming on his cell phone says. ‘She’s about to bleed to death right there.’

‘She’s a victim.’

Turning toward Lazaro, the man says: ‘That piece of s***!’

The man then tells officers that he was afraid Lazaro would threaten him and his son.

‘I’m just glad he didn’t attack my son,’ he said.

‘We were walking around the track and he looked at me and he had that big machete.

‘But my son just kept running. I’m just glad the motherf*****r kept going that way.’

‘Obviously he’s suffering some kind of delusion or mental illness, he’s running around with a machete,’ said a neighbor who identified himself as Ronald.

‘He had the machete in plain sight. He wasn’t trying to hide it.’

The man then applauded the cops for shooting Lazaro while lamenting that the officer didn’t fire more rounds..

‘Yeah, I encourage that shooting,’ he said. ‘They should have emptied the gun.’

Police received numerous 911 calls from residents of the neighborhood who were alarmed at the sight of Lazaro brandishing a large machete while walking around the area before attacking Duda.

‘I’m just grateful to be alive,’ Duda wrote on her social media account while being treated at Kings County Hospital.

‘I was walking Honey when I was attacked by a stranger w/a machete. Multiple head/face lacerations. Severed tendon & fractured bones in my right hand. Lacerations to my right hand. Honey was also injured & required stitches, but I’ve been told she’s doing great.”

Her daughter, Savannah Cruz, told DailyMail.com her mother is now home from hospital.

'She is okay, in a whole lot of pain but we’re all strong and will make sure she receives the best care,’ Savannah said.

'She’s is home in stable condition, just happy to alive and thankful for everyone who helped her.'

Lazaro's stepmother, Julia Lazaro, 51, told the New York Daily News that she was shocked when she heard the news.

'I started crying,' the stepmother said. 'I think of him as my actual son. He’s not like that.

'He’s never been like that.'

Julia said that the police used excessive force in fatally shooting her stepson.

'The police didn’t have to shoot him like that,' she said.

'He had a machete. The police had a gun. There was a different way to stop him than killing him.'

She added: 'I felt so terrible. I couldn’t believe it.

'I raised him. I bought him clothes. I did everything for him and he is now gone.'

Julia said that her stepson was on track to graduate from high school. He had planned to pursue a career as a 'technician' working on cars.

Cruz told the Daily News that she sympathized with Julia.

'This man did lose his life. He’s 18 years old,' she said.

'Don’t get me wrong, I’m frustrated, I’m angry, and I’m upset about what he did to my mom, and he could have cost her her life.'

Cruz added: 'This kid, you don’t know people’s lives.

'I truly do feel sorry for his family that has to deal with the loss of him, and I just hope that this doesn’t happen to anybody, and I hope that people pay more attention to what other people are going through.'

NYPD Chief of Detectives Juanita Holmes said officers responded to multiple 911 calls in the Bronwsville section of Brooklyn about a man, later identified as Lazaro, who was 'acting erratic, laying on the ground, damaging parked vehicles, attempting to enter one caller’s front yard and chasing people in the area with the machete.'

A 50-year-old woman walking her dog near the intersection of Strauss Street and Dumont Avenue at 6.15pm was attacked by Lazaro, Holmes said, suffering deep cuts to her head and both hands. Her dog was cut in the shoulder.

'I saw people coming out on stretchers, the lady with her dog. The dog was barking. This is crazy,' neighbor Keisha Tull told CBS New York.

Tull also told the New York Daily News that the shooting took place in front of a young boy, who was later seen crying in a nearby park.

The deadly incident was the second officer-involved shooting in Brooklyn in as many days, after an officer responding to reports about a gunman shot and wounded 35-year-old Curtis McGarrell in the leg on Lenox Road in central Brooklyn on Monday.  No gun was ultimately found on McGarrell.

New York City had recorded 447 killings as of Tuesday, a 41 per cent increase over last year and the largest number since 2011. The number of people shot has more than doubled last year’s total, nearing a 14-year high.

This year also marked the third consecutive year of rising homicides after New York City recorded a modern-era low of 292 killings in 2017.
