Australian man locked up in a hellhole Bali prison accused of working as a courier for alleged British drug dealer says he's sorry for breaking the law as he didn't realise the consequences would be 'so harsh'

Perth man Aaron Wayne Coyle says he's sorry for breaking the law in Bali and didn't realise Indonesian drug laws were so harsh.

Locked up in a Bali jail cell for four months, he was hoping to find out this week how much longer he would be calling prison home.

But just when he thought judges would hand down their verdict and sentence, he was frustrated to learn the case would be delayed.

Coyle was arrested in September 2020 in Bali and charged over 1.23 grams of methamphetamine which prosecutors allege he had in his possession.

Prosecutors have recommended the judges sentence him to 18 months behind bars.

When Coyle appeared via videolink before the judges this week, he was angered to learn they were not ready to deliver the verdict.

As he left the hearing, he told of his frustration at the delay and his regret.

'I am very sorry for breaking the law. I didn't think it was so harsh over here and I regret it,' Coyle said.

He said he initially believed the case would take a few weeks.

'I have been told three-to-four weeks, now it is going to be nine weeks such a small case.

'I love my family, friends, and justice will be seen at the end of it.'

Coyle has already spent four months behind bars and has had his verdict hearing delayed until January 21

He says he is running short of his medication.

'I was supposed to get my medication two days ago. I am running out of medication. I am not well,' Coyle said.

Coyle faces a drug possession charge and also a charge of personal use.

He is now scheduled to hear his verdict on January 21.
