'You broke the rules': Karl Stefanovic grills Gladys Berejiklian after she admitted failing to isolate while waiting for her covid test results - but denied doing anything wrong
Karl Stefanovic has grilled Gladys Berejiklian over claims she failed to isolate while waiting on her COVID-19 test results.
The Today Show host repeatedly questioned the NSW premier over whether she had broken her own rules during the programme on Tuesday morning.
But Ms Berejiklian refused to budge, standing firm on her stance that she was not at fault because she did not have any symptoms.
'I knew it was just my larynx, just my voice. I didn't have any symptoms, I didn't feel unwell,' she said.
Stefanovic fired back saying: 'You did break your own rules, you broke NSW health rules'.
Ms Berejiklian took the test on Tuesday last week when she began losing her voice.
She continued to hold meetings as she waited for the results. Her test results came back negative about two hours later.
Under NSW Health guidelines, anyone who has had a COVID-19 test must self-isolate until they have been given the all-clear with a confirmed negative result.
Ms Berejiklian admitted she failed to isolate, confirming she met with multiple people during the two-hour period as it was Budget Day.
But she refused to admit she was in the wrong as she did not have any COVID-19 symptoms.
'My voice was starting to go, I had no sore throat, no scratchy throat, no other symptoms, but I thought in an abundance of caution I'd take a test. I was told it come in 90 minutes to two hours,' she told the Today Show.
'I didn't change my schedule, they came they did the test and it came back negative.
The host began calmly grilling the premier over whether she did in fact breach her own rules.
'I've just laid out the facts. I took the test not because I thought I had any symptoms but because I was losing my voice and I was wanting to make sure I was overly cautious,' she replied.
He responded saying: 'You did break your own rules, you broke NSW health rules'.
'Well… ordinarily, if I was an ordinary citizen I wouldn't have any symptoms, so I wouldn't have taken the test but I went over and above,' she said.
'I didn't have any of the symptoms but I went over and above and took the test.'
Stefanovic then fired up, saying: 'But premier, you broke the rules.'
'That's all down to interpretation. I took a test that I didn't really need to. Perhaps in that timeframe I should've shut my door,' she said.
Social media has been filled with users hitting out at Ms Berejiklian for allegedly breaking her own rules.
Queensland Premier joined in on Monday night, reminding Queenslanders to get tested.
'Remember if you're sick with any symptoms at all, stay home and arrange a COVID-19 test,' she tweeted. 'Thanks for keeping each other safe.'
