Boy, nine, saves his mother from drowning in a pool by using a first aid technique he learnt from watching his favourite TV show Bondi Rescue

A nine-year-old boy has been hailed a superhero after saving his mum's life with a first aid technique he saw on his favourite television show.

Melbourne youngster Jesse Tait was enjoying a post-dinner swim with his family three weeks ago when his mum Sarah dived into the backyard pool and didn't come back up. 

Her husband Warren first thought she was playing a joke with the kids before his young son suddenly realised she was drowning and sprung into action with a move he had seen lifeguards perform on Bondi Rescue.

'I realised I couldn't lift her out. So I flipped her over and started pushing on her on her tummy,' Jesse told The Project.

'I thought there might have been water, so I pushed and then water came out. Then she started saying, 'Help'.

Ms Tait fractured her spine in two places and is now recovering at the Royal Talbot Rehabilitation Centre. 

'I thought I was going to die at one point,' she told the program.

'Being face down and not being able to do anything, I just, it went quiet and I thought that was it. He's my superhero.'

Mr Tait believes his wife may not be alive today if it wasn't for his son's courage and quick thinking.

'I'm not a religious person, but it's miraculous that he knew what to do that day for nothing more than watching Bondi Rescue,' he said. 

'My 9-year-old gave me and my missus 60 years together. How do you repay a 9-year-old for saving your wife?'

Jesse was congratulated on his heroic efforts by Bondi Rescue lifeguard boss Bruce 'Hoppo' Hopkins in a special video call.

'You might end up with a lifeguard after this. Might put me out of a job,' he told the excited youngster. 

Jesse now says he hopes to save more lives when he gets older.

'I want to help people and make sure they're safe,' he said.
