'They looked like a normal family,' the resident said.

'It is shocking to hear. It must be pretty bad, judging on all the police that are here.'

The child had also reportedly been stabbed in what is suspected to be a domestic violence-related incident.

The family's two eldest children attend the nearby Narre Warren South P-12 College, The Herald Sun reported.

An elderly woman reportedly lives at the property where she looks after her three grandchildren.

Witnesses said the family's middle-aged mother was comforting her youngest child on the lawn immediately after the stabbing.
