'You showed me how to love again': Broken girlfriend of talented Aussie football player, 39, who died in freak circumstances in Sicily breaks her silence

The heartbroken girlfriend of a talented Australian football player who died after being hit by a train while jogging in Italy has broken her silence.

Jake Ryan, 39, and Kimberly Driedger spent two months on a dream holiday together travelling through the United States earlier this year.

The pair were going to continue travelling for many more months, with plans to spend Christmas in Portugal but tragedy struck this week, ending those plans.

Mr Ryan, who played in Queensland, Victoria and Western Australia, was jogging in Avola in Sicily with headphones on beside a railway line on Tuesday morning when he was hit by the train.

The driver stopped the train and tried to revive Mr Ryan but his injuries were too severe, the Giornale Di Sicilia newspaper reported.

Ms Driedger has since issued an emotional message for the 'sweetest, most considerate gentleman'.

'How do I say goodbye … Seeing your face and hearing your voice every day for the past 2 months … how do we get back to that?' she wrote.

'We were meant to have so much more time together … to play one more game of Go Fish. To spend Christmas in Portugal together. To laugh with each other and smile just once more.

'Mi Amor, please come back. I need you, so I can smile again. So that we can fulfill all the beautiful things we talked about together.

'You were the sweetest, most considerate, the truest gentleman of all. You were so special. You showed me how to love again. I miss you. My double rainbow. Thank you for blessing my soul with your love. They don't make many of you.'

His brother Mitch Ryan said on Wednesday that Jake was the type of person that would not let anything stop him from from living life to the fullest.

'His whole life's been about squeezing every drop out of the lemon,' his brother Mitch Ryan told 7News.

The brothers were both in Kuta in 2002 when terrorists struck, killing 202 people including 88 Australians.

Just two days before his death, Mr Ryan posted about the 18th anniversary of the attacks.

'18 years.. a lifetime ago.. yet seems like yesterday.. you see pics like this and you reflect back and I just think how lucky we were to get home.. some weren't.. our love, prayers, thoughts and support with you and your families today,' he wrote.

'Being on the trip I'm on at the moment is a perfect reminder of how lucky I am. Why you have to have a crack everyday, do as much as you can, and live as much of a life as you can for the ones who lost theirs.'

Mr Ryan shared the heartfelt post alongside a photo of the rubble following the bombings.

Tributes flowed for the avid footballer who coached the youth squad at Southport Sharks.

Fellow survivor Andrew Csabi said he was devastated when he heard of Mr Ryan's  passing, saying the pair had a 'bond for life' after the attacks.

'I remember Jake just being a typical young Aussie man, he didn't fear anything. He loved his family and he loved his mates. He was flamboyant, fit, outgoing, everyone likes him.' Mr Csabi told the Gold Coast Bulletin.

'I went to his family's birthdays, I went to Mitch's 21st, family outings and we'd catch up on anniversaries. It's a bond you've got for life after Bali,' he said.

'Sad day today as we lost one of the best! RIP great man Jake Ryan, never met a bloke to live life harder or better than him,' one friend wrote on social media.

'Can't believe it. You were living each day to the full and with such a grateful heart. Rest In Peace,' said another.

'Love ya legend. Unbelievable energy and fun. Devastated,' a third wrote.

Mr Ryan was just 21 when he survived the Bali Bombings while on holiday on the Indonesian party island with his brother Mitch.

'I know what pain really is after that. I was ready to pass out but was so scared of never waking up again,' he told the Border Mail.

'I saw some very ordinary things, people missing limbs trying to escape, being burnt to death etc. I think when I went back to the front of the club to look for my brother , there was no road or pavement. I was literally standing on dead bodies. They were also burning hot as the fire was raging. That stays with me definitely.'

'I remember before going in to the op theatre in Bali and thinking if this is it?,' he said.

'Thinking of my family, my gran, my dogs, my mates, I'd tried my hardest with my footy, I thought about my funeral, what songs they would play, who would carry me out, how many would be there.'

Doctors were forced to chop off his right heel as it was 'just flapping'.
