It comes as NSW recorded three new cases on Saturday - including one in hotel quarantine.

The other two cases were a St Vincent's Hospital nurse and someone who had been in contact with staff member.

NSW Health has issued a public alert, saying the casual nurse worked an evening shift on Wednesday.

'It is believed the nurse provided specialised care to a single patient, and had limited contact with a very small number of colleagues,' NSW Health said in a statement on Friday night.

There were hopes NSW would be declared COVID-free after 12 days with no community transmissions.

But that streak was broken on Wednesday where three new cases in south-west Sydney were identified, and many more have since been recorded.

'It's not a surprise ... and my expectation is that will happen again,' NSW Premier Gladys Berijiklian told reporters on Wednesday.

'We're always going to have cases pop up because we're in a pandemic, but we're also in an economy that is open, where people are undertaking their business, where we don't have borders but for Victoria.

'We're managing it well, but we will never be out of the woods until there's a vaccine.'
