Fail! Nearly 300 L-drivers sitting driving theory test get every one of the 50 questions wrong (even though it’s multiple choice)

After you’ve stumped up £23 for your driving theory test, it is recommended that you do at least 20 hours of swotting before the exam. 

But it would seem some candidates don’t even manage to open the Highway Code.

An astonishing 279 learner drivers flunked the test by getting every one of the 50 questions wrong – even though it’s multiple-choice.

According to the Driving Standards Agency, a further 222 people scored only one right, while 1,603 correctly answered ten questions or fewer.

Even if an applicant were to guess randomly, they should score around 12 marks because every question comes with four possible answers.

Campaigners questioned if aspiring drivers were really taking the test seriously, with one describing the zero results as ‘quite an achievement’. 

While some of the questions are difficult, others should only require common sense.

There are about 1,000 questions in total, from which applicants will be tested on 50 selected at random. 

One reads: ‘You’ve been involved in an argument that has made you feel angry. What should you do before starting your journey?’ 

Those who failed gave the incorrect answers of opening a window, turning on the radio or having an alcoholic drink rather than correctly saying you should calm down.

And it is perhaps better that those who did not know the answer to ‘A driver’s behaviour has upset you. What can you do to safely get over this incident?’, are not on the road. 

Instead of correctly saying you should stop and take a break, they suggested the response was to either shout abuse, gesture to them with a hand, or follow them while flashing their headlights.

Ernesto Suarez, founder of iCarhireinsurance.com, said: ‘It’s quite an achievement for almost 300 people to score zero out of 50. 

'They were either exhausted or came to a total dead-end in their knowledge.’

Last year 1.9 million people took the test, with just over one million achieving the 43 or higher pass mark the first time.

Paul Silverwood, of the Under 17 Car Club charity, said: ‘The number who fail their theory tests first time is disturbing.

‘It suggests not just a reluctance to do the essential reading… but also a failure to comprehend that the cost of a resit outweighs the cost of a Highway Code or the many revision aids available.’
