Phil Gould suffers an embarrassing slip of the tongue while commentating the NRL Grand Final - as fans accuse the ex-Penrith Panthers boss of 'bias'

Legendary commentator Phil Gould has suffered a slip of the tongue during the NRL Grand Final.

The Channel 9 presenter made the embarrassing blunder while responding to images of a Melbourne Storm player receiving treatment after a late hit by Penrith Panthers rival James Fisher-Harris during Sunday night's game.

Brandon Smith was badly injured and escorted off the field while his opponent was later placed on report.

But rather than saying Fisher-Harris made a late shot while viewing the graphics, Gould said he made a 'late s***'.

It comes as fans accused Gould, who used to manage the Panthers until he was sacked in 2019, of 'biased' commentary.

At one point the veteran host claimed the Western Sydney team were still in the game after they went 16-0 down after try was blocked by Suliasi Vunivalu intercept try.

'I honestly feel the Panthers are on top,' Gould said.

'The run of the play I feel like they're doing better than the Melbourne Storm but the Storm have been able to keep the scoreboard kicking with penalty try and penalty goal and now intercept.'

Gould continued on to say 'the scoreboard's just not friendly', while suggesting the struggling team were doing well.

He also struggled to contain his frustration with referees after disagreeing with a knock-on call against Panthers player Viliame Kikau in the first half.

'It wasn't knocked on. He actually threw a pass that was knocked down by a Melbourne Storm player ... The ruling's wrong. The ruling's wrong.'

Fans and sport starts questioned his commentary on Twitter, claiming it was difficult to listen to.

Tennis champion Dylan Alcott wrote: '22-0 to the Storm but ALL the momentum with the Panthers according to big Gus Gould. Give it a rest.'

Former AFL reporter Rohan Connolly didn't mask his opinions when he slammed Gould as 'biased'.

'This has got to be the most pathetic call of a major sporting event I've ever heard. How the hell does Channel 9 cop this?' he tweeted.

One viewer joked: 'Does Gus go for Penrith? Can’t tell.'

'If I get 1,000 likes will you pull Gus Gould from the commentary box?' another user asked sarcastically.
